I was servicing my skid loader today getting ready to sell it. It is scheduled to be on my online auction later this month. Pulled off the radiator cap and there is oil in the coolant. Arrrgh! Loading it up in the morning to go to the shop. I hope it is only a head gasket.

if it has an oil cooler I would be checking that first as oil pressure is higher than rad pressure and that's where it will go is into the coolant if the cooler is bad. I have seen this happen a few times on tractors.

Yeah. That would be good if that's it. I ran it with the radiator cap off and the coolant was dancing up out of the neck. Maybe just vibration but it looked like it might be getting some compression into the water jacket. It hasn't been overheating though. I am taking it to the dealer. They have a good shop so we'll see what they find.

You got me thinking about this. I understand that the higher oil pressure would force oil into the cooling system when it is running. But wouldn't the residual cooling system pressure force coolant into the oil pan after you shut it off? I cracked the oil plug before draining the oil and there was no coolant in the oil.

No as that pressure is not high enough. Oil pressure is high enough to push through a bad head gasket into radiaror but not enough pressure to go the other way unless gasket is completely gone.
