It is likely that there is an old Square profile Oring in the bottom of the groove. They are nearly as hard as steel, and take a thin blade disposable
screw driver with the end ground into a bevel to make a one sded spear to dig it out with much grief. If you cant find the old ring, that is where it
is. They do not seal with it in there. Jim

I did pull the old gasket with a pick. It was pretty stiff and not very compliant. The baldwin filter i picked up from TSC also came with a square profile o-ring. It's a PITA to seat in the groove and its not super well contained. I'll snap some photos in the daylight. My hunch is that it's deforming in a bad way as the housing comes down on it. Its roughly the same size as the housing--- seems junky to me to be honest, but im not sure what OEM ones install like either.
 
Make sure you coat that o-ring with some oil before you stick it back on, or you'll have a devil of a time getting it out next time.
 
With a screw driver you can poke the new one in enough to make it stick then the canister will push it up with the edge and seal.
 
I hope you didn't in any way stretch that square section seal ring, if you did you will NEVER get it pushed into the groove and be leak free.

30 years ago my very pretty 30 year old female Boss walked into my office playing with a sealing ring for a water filter exactly like your seal ring. She was stretching it and sliding it over her hands. She asked me about what the ring was used for. She had stretched it several times, and I told her, "Just use it for a rubber band, it will never seal anything anymore."

I'll tell you a secret, the oil filter seal rings in my Super H is about 25 years old, and 15 years old in the M. Dad and I never changed them, and I only changed them them so I know how old they really are.
 
I bet there is a 2nd old oring still in the groove. The square profile oring should fit in the groove and the top surface of it that mates the filter can should not stick up above the top of the filter base. As catguy says they can get real hard and fool you to think it is metal.
 
Another thing on those oil filters. Is there a little tiny 1/8 pipe plug under
the lip. You really need to remove it if you can. The bottom casting has that
gully under the filter and crud builds up in there. Put ONE wrap of teflon tape
on the plug. Just enough to make it seal.
 
If your battery lead sizzled and boiled off the water, you have a loose or dirty connection at the posts. That will make it crank slow also, or not at all. Take the leads off, clean the terminals, and put them on tight. Also, make sure the battery isn't filthy dirty, as that can drain the charge by providing a path from the positive to negative terminal. Throw a charger on it also. If your wires are all tight and on right it should fire up.
 
Replaced the ground lead with one from the local autoparts store that came as one piece. Also replaced the spade terminal connectors on my 12V conversion resistor since those didn't look to have been crimped on well. Fired right up.

Of course... it was on the coldest morning in NH so far this year, so it didn't want to move anywhere. I put a space heater underneath roughly pointed at the clutch/tranny and came back a few hours later and all was well. I'm seeing a full fluids flush in my future.

You guys rock. I've learned way too much from you this past week. Things are looking up though!
 

hey MODS-- there is something seriously wrong with this thread. There are posts that are missing--- and it seems to depend on how i navigate to the page-- whether or not i come from my email links, or navitage from the YT homepage. But its pretty messed up....
 

For anyone reading a long that can't parse this since some of the replies are missing.. hopefully you can see this:

Carb kit is on order
The oil filter was double gasketed by the previous owner and i dug the old one out
Replacing the ground cable fixed the crank issue (cleaning the lugs wasn't an option since it melted off)
