1990 Chev. odometer

Hello. I recently acquired a nice 1990 Chevy Cheyenne pick up that I need some information about. To make this as tractor related post, it will be my parts fetching vehicle when I work on my tractors and equipment. The problem is that the speedometer works fine but the mileage odometer does not move. There were several articles about this online that said a plastic gear in there would break. I found an odometer gear on Amazon for ~$30. Any body done this? If so how much trouble is it? I assume the instrument cluster will have to be removed? I would like to know what goes on and if an average minded person might be able to do it.

Somebody will know, but I thought they were electric with an adapter that is held in the tail shaft with one bolt. That is the plastic gear. (drivers side)

The odometer is driven by a tiny electric motor controlled by the 'puter.

Any possible repairs will require disassembly of the instrument cluster to access the motor and the little plastic gears associated with it.

If you feel you are up to that some GOOGLING and Youtubing will (possibly) give you more details.

Other options would be a salvage yard cluster, a re-man cluster, or sending yours away for repairs.

Also, there's all sorts of (cheap) GPS speedometers/odometers on fleabay and amazon that will record mileage for you without the need to a repair or replace a (nearly antique) gauge cluster.

This was a common problem on that series.

The odometer is driven by a little electric motor. Simplest is to replace the odometer, itself. The miles won't be correct, and if and when you get rid of the vehicle you'll have to sell it TMU. (True Miles Unknown). But, on that old a pickup the miles probably won't matter, anyway.

Thinking about it, though, I don't think the gear breaks, if I recall wear in the shafts and bearings causes the little gears to jump teeth.

Years ago, I bought an '89 pickup on an auction. The odometer showed 259,000 miles. When I drove it home from the auction, I found out the odometer was stuck on 259,000. I replaced the odometer with one that showed around 80,000.
I rebuilt the body and used it for several years.

I finally sold it on another auction, and had the auctioneer announce that I had no idea of how many miles the pickup actually had on it, and even though the odometer read 97,000 it was actually more like 300,000. I still made money on it.

In fact, I ran across a deal on a 2000 Chevy that I couldn't pass up. The bottom line was, I upgraded 11 years for $1700.
