do any of you guys run tractor supply's travellar oil in your machines,particularly 15w40 diesel,and if any of you have,is it a good oil.i have heard it is made by warren distribution,and is supposedly a good oil,but I was wondering what you guys think,because I am looking for a good oil for my trucks and tractors,that is a decent price.i appreciate any info,thanks

Run it my my 7.3 powerstroke and ford 4610, no problems, iv never had a engine fail due to brand of oil.

Why not buy it in the barrel and save a lot more money per gallon? I need to price a barrel soon and will probably get it for about 6 or 8 dollars a gallon for it. Like I said need to get a price on it. I will not pay the 12-20 a gallon it is in jugs.
 
caterpillar guy-what kind of oil do you get,and where could I find oil by the drums, I would really like to get a drum if they are available,but I haven't seen any localy,so if I have to I guess I could order it online,thanks.

Bulk oil can be had from many suppliers. Over the years I have bought full 55 gallon barrels from Conoco, Ford New Holland, Case IH, John Deere, Shell and Mobil Oil. I have suspected the cheaper brands have a lesser robust additive package and the viscosity deteriorates more quickly. I use 15w-40 diesel rated oil in all out trucks and tractors. But when we expect to use equipment during the coldest of winter, we use 5w-40 synthetic to give lubrication during very cold starts. If the engine is to be plugged in (electric heater) for 6 or more hours, then the 15-40 oil will be fluid enough to protect the engine. Very new engines may have different requirements.

I have been using their 15-40 for years in all my tractors. The owner manuals call for straight 30 w. I change oil in each once a year, in spring. That way the diluted thinner oil is in there during the winter.
 
When 55 gallon drums were a couple hundred dollars we use to get em now that they are 650 or 700$ I don?t buy em I hate bulk oil anyway always gotta find a clean jug and the barrel pump spout is always full of dirt Not to mention those barrels can draw in moisture once you open them so you have to be a little bit careful how you store them . My first job at a new Holland dealer we got rid of 5 or 6 drums that had been stored improperly they had all drawn in water .
 
I was gonna say the same thing, it went from $480 a 55 gal drum up to $600 to $700 here, just easier to buy it by 5 gallons now.
 
In the old days the Diesel engine oil could plug catalytic converters not an issue now with all the emissions on Diesel engines
 
I dident know that. Mines a 2000 7.3, no emissions, no converter, no def crap💩, 226,000 miles on conventional oil, never been touched, I?m gonna go with synthetic oil this April I think.

Man that?s a nice rig ! I usually run shell t6 full synthetic in the truck at 10,000 mile intervals I use to run 15,000 mile intervals I use to do oil analysis on every other change I could double it to 30,000 and still be well within the guidelines never had one sample above just in the single digits on wear metal or silicon (dirt) or fuel dilution at 15000 intervals
 
That?s good to know, my truck does not go out in winter here anymore, as the idiots put so much salt down, my brother has a 99 f250 7.3 he useta plow with, he went with synthetic oil, for cold start,, I have no idea why he would not plug 🔌 it in? Finally He said freg plowing and ruining my truck from the dam salt! Pay NY to ruin my truck!! He went threw it last winter fixed it up nice.
 
Most any fuel distributor will have it or be able to get it. IF they have a truck to deliver fuel oil or gas with they will be the guys to see.
We keep ours inside year around. They even get there when they come. Barrels don't get left out. I keep a clean rag over the top of the spout on the pump and use clean jugs for the oil. With them all in the old milkhouse they are out of the dust dirt and clean.
SV I can see you having trouble being able to keep things clean with the wind and dust you guys have in that open windy part of the country. WE had that issue when I was on a wheat crew 30 years ago. More so down in the plains states than in the north. Around a spud digger is really terrible to keep things clean. All that sand blowing off chains and such.
 
Sam's has the best price on shell 15w-40 in 55 gal drums but they wont do farm tax exempt so that make rural king the same price. I would rather shop at rural king any way.
 
Depends on how you use your tractor. Light duty, mowing grass, parades, hay rides, raking hay, etc., almost anything will work. A lot of farm tractor owners have come to depend on the oils designed for diesel powered trucks and most of it works OK. There is better oil designed for hard working farm tractors. Most trucks operate in the 25% of max power range. Hard pulling farm tractors work in the 75% to 100% range in a lot more dust than most trucks ever see. Manufacturers have been working with oil companies for many years to develop oils that are better suited for farm tractor use. John Deere and CaseIH have been doing this for a long, long time and have oils that are much better than the common truck oils. Just my two cents worth. When operating $100,000 tractors, combines, etc., I don't skimp on maintenance. Your call.
 
I just researched it some more, and if the engine does't use any oil, then the zink does't got to the converter anyhow, so that's not the biggest problem. But, in a modern gas engine, 15-40 is way to heavy, by modern, I mean <15 years old, possibly with variable valve timing.
 
all my machines are older than 1990 so i just keep workin em' and fixing what i can,i am a cheap guy but i would take an old tractor/truck before a new one.i don't mind going with a better oil,i am considering shell rotella t4 or Delco,but what oil do you guys run in your equipment.i would really like to use just one type of oil for my diesels,the gassers are another story,but just the same i know i get what i pay for,and i am always just looking to take the best care of my equipment.it really doesn't matter to me if i can't use tsc oil,i just want your input so i know what to use,whether it be tsc or mobil 1.thanks
