Farmall 460 Tachometer

I have a Farmall 460 gas (1963 model) that the old tachometer quit last summer. The first one I bought to replace it would only show 1200 rpm when tractor was running wide open, should show 1800 rpm. The second on I purchased worked exactly the same. Drive gear at distributor is fine, cable is fine, checked cable with my digital tachometer and it reads around 600 rpm when tractor is running wide open. I can get the new tachometer to show 1800 rpm with my cordless drill running at around 875 rpm. Any thoughts or suggestions as to what is wrong. Thanks.

Hard to believe something made overseas doesn't work correctly. You could have your original rebuilt by Star Speedometer. 386-569-5284.

What does your digital show for crankshaft RPM?

Not sure what the gear ratio of the tach drive gear is, assuming 1:1 of the distributor speed, so 600 RPM at the drive would be 1200 engine RPM.

Are you sure the governor is adjusted correctly?

Have any long cranks laying around. I have cranked many a 4 and 560 when doing engine work on
them. Pull the spark plugs, put something in the tach drive and count the revolutions in relation
to engine revolutions. Might be better than buying another tach .

Just remembered, made a crank for the last one I worked on. Long rod, a torch to make the bend and
a hole in end for a pin. Just a idea.

According to Star Speedometer the tachs for 460 had a 3:1 ratio and other ones had a 2:1 ratio so that will explain why they didn't work.
