I Got a MC crawler rather nice shape , was thinking of switching it from 6 volt to 12 how much of a pain is it to do? I am shure there are kits for that available.

Can you drill holes and weld? If so make a bracket and go to a salvage yard and get an alternator from a car. The cost of a battery is the largest cost,

While on that machine I cannot be 100% sure but on most one can flip the generator bracket and then use a long bolt to mount the alternator. Me I would use an alternator made to fit a 1980 Chevy pickup no A/C no power anything. New cost is around $50. That is a Delco 10SI 3 wire alternator

Why ?

6 volt adequately started it when it was new. I have a Oliver 60 that will start on a "0" degree day with 6 volt.

I can give you a whole lists of reasons to convert. And other than a trailer queen show tractor no other reason to keep it 6 volt.

The 10SI series Delco is the most common and economical alternator choice.

There are probably kits available, but the kits are notorious for being "not quite right", so if you do get a kit, be prepared to do some fine tuning to get it to fit.

And fit is critical. The alignment needs to be correct, the bracket needs to fit the base of the alternator so the bolt can be tightened securely without stressing the bracket, or leaving the alternator loose.

The pulley width can be an issue too. Most automotive pulleys are narrow, while old tractors use wide belts. Since the existing pulleys will stay, it is necessary to find a wider pulley for the alternator. Wide pulleys are readily available.

As for the electrical, the 12v battery will need to be connected negative ground, the regulator removed, the amp gauge wiring reversed (if equipped), the coil polarity reversed, either a true 12v coil installed, or a 1.5 ohm resistor installed between the ignition switch and the coil.

As for wiring the alternator, there is a "one wire" version available, which is as it says, just one wire. There is also a 3 wire style. It requires a little more wiring, but is still simple to do.

Keep in touch with any questions, it's not difficult.

Lets have those reasons.I can only think of one reason and that is to use accesories made only in 12 volt. And beter starting is not one of the reasons. Just thought of a second and that is 12volt are avaible in places like wallmart but not 6 volt, other than those two reasons cannot come up with any more,

you've had it explained to u before, most likely several times. going around with your hands over your ears while yelling LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU doesn't put u in a position to learn anything.

sorry, don - my first post was a reply to leroy, not u. i don't know why it was posted as a reply to u.
