Picture of a really big engine we saw yesterday.

Our class was given a tour of the city?s local backup generator plant. This is one of 5 generators they have. Most of them are 3000 hp and 2000 kw. Seems like a little under powered considering we always liked to have 2hp/kw with a pto driven one, but then again these are stationary with no transmission or hydraulics robbing power. I think they said this engine is an early 60?s Merlin V16. When you walk around the catwalk you notice there?s no valve pans. They manually grease the rockers and they?re 4 valve per cylinder. They said if the dipstick is down an inch it takes 55 gallons to top it up. They have 2 newer kohlers with V 16 Cats and a V12 cummins.

I'd enjoy seeing that. They say how it fires up? Air? Friend in iceland is always on call to man the twin Cat V-12s that sit up on a hill for backup power. 1970s era Cats, enough power for their tiny village.

That would be a nice plant to see as well. They fired it up for
us,a guy opened an air valve and when it was running on its
own he turned the valve off. They said it only runs at 450 rpm.
It was pretty loud but not too bad. There?s only around 10-12
000 people in Summerside and only 1 production facility in the
city which happens to be a cheese/fluid plant. They have their
own backup power. In the summer if there?s an outage the 5
generators can handle the entire city but in winter when lots of
heating loads are being used they have to do rolling blackouts
to keep everyone warm.

Went with and old friend a few years older then me that ran a engine repair for the oil fields one time to help hi tear down a HUGE CLIMAX natural gas engine used on a compressor , the pistons where bigger then 55 gallon drums and to get to the connection rods you had to get inside the engine and use torque multipliers to break the rod bolt loose on and 1 and a 1/2 drive HUGE socket . We used and H D 6 Allis highlift with a boom pole to pull the pistons and load them on a trailer along with the heads . Huge is all i can say i was like 16-17 at the time .

It?s a small City in Prince Edward Island in eastern Canada called Summerside. It?s a small port city on the south shore.

Morning: I see a bit of similarity to the Kruupp Mak engines known as " MAK" , I had on the ship, they are 7500hp at 600 rpm, 6000 vac, head and auxiliary items are basic to a lot of the bigger engines, and actually MAK was purchased by CATAPILLAR, when the US icebreaker " HEALY" was built, as CAT at the time didn't have an engine large enough to bid the contract.....so they bought the competition..:)
try to get more road trips anytime you can.....only way to see what's in your own back yard.

Those size are very common in the natural gas and electrical generation industry.

I am working on some 2500 HP right now in Paullina Iowa, and have worked on 10,000 HP.

Think about the torque on the crankshaft, as those are probably 300 RPM units.

evening: I wrote it and didn't think of others not in the field reading it different, my bad.
And I did make a mistake also, I meant 6600 vac, or in the field it would be read as 6.6 kv,( 6600 kilo volts) 5 engines in total.
AC being alternating current, they replaced 3 steam turbine units that were 900 volts direct current, producing 10,000 hp each.
Hope I answered your question.

Ok thanks . With all the fake things and everything else I didn?t know if cheese fluid was something new or if cheese wiz was cheese fluid
