The half inch mark is in the wrong place. The lines look spaced right, but the long one is at 7/16

I went to buy a 4' level in a local hardware store in Texas many years back. They had 2 of the one I wanted. I went to the checkout and commented that I feel sorry for the fella that gets the other one.

An older guy asks why (I was early 20's at the time, but looked like still in school). Told him the one I left behind was way off, but this one was dead-on. Well, seems he had no idea it was possible to check them. So, I had him go and get the other level.

At the end of the checkout, I marked off a place to ensure repeatability. Laid my level down, then turned it end-for-end, then flipped it. All the readings were the same. Took the other level and tried it and got different readings each time. Afterwards, I made sure they knew their checkout was out of level as well. *lol*

That's still my go-to level!

Unfortunately, my tale is not NEARLY as funny as Jon's tape measure. That's funny!!

Come on now, it is only slightly wrong at 10 7/16 and at 10 1/2; what are you complaining about!?!
(Assuming all the other lines are accurate in length and position. LOL)

One time years ago some teenage Boy Scouts came to help with some projects at a building where i was a volunteer. One thing they were doing was putting blocking between the rafters at the top of the walls to keep the chipmunks from coming into the attic. We had some old 2x4s to cut the pieces from. One kid was measuring the spaces with a tape, the other one was measuring and cutting the blocks on a chop saw. The kid who was measuring called out "19 and two thirds inches" and the other kid repeated it back to him, and then cut it. The odd thing was that it fit in the space pretty good and tight.

My brother was helping a carpenter. After too many miss communications on measuring he bought a tape for my brother with no marks on it at all.

Just measure a board and put one mark on the tape.

Concur; I have been guilty myself.
However, when it comes to communicating a certain size over the phone I've found it is more convenient to use something more common, like inches or centimeters.

Late spring flood time, go to Menards and ask about tape measure in cubits, sometime next to the Gopher wood. RN

So China has enough issues making products that meet our high standards (but we still like to buy cheap) ..... and then somebody has to make things even worse for them by photo-shopping a messed up measuring tape and also the lettering on a wrench. There's always somebody lurking out there to fool us mortals .... ha!

That would be funny if it weren?t so close to true......

I?m still smiling a little.

I know nothing about photo-shop, but I showed the wrench pic to my daughter, who is a graphic artist. She said it's hard to know for sure whether that was real or not, but said it very well could have been photo-shopped. Just to prove it, she changed it back--said it took her less than 5 minutes!
