Best way to align shaft from crankshaft to hydraulic pump

I need to redo location of hydraulic pump because of not being level. I know there's no way of being perfect, but is there a tool or a way to do this? It's a 19" rod that is 7/8" thick connected to crankshaft by an adapter plate, on the other end is 3/4" coupler connected to the hydraulic pump. Pump is welded to a plate, but not aligned good. Is there a way to make a better way both vertically & horizontally? A digital level? I know I need to go thicker metal to weld to.

Remove what you have holding the pump. Remove the pump and love-joy coupling, but not the shaft. Purchase a "U" channel measuring 6 inches wide and with 1 inch flanges made of 1/4" plate (probably 20 inches long) with a hole for the shaft and bolt holes for the pump mount. (personally I would shorten the existing shaft to allow the pump to be closer to the grill, making it less prone to damage) The shaft needs to be straight out of the engine front crank snout. If it is a second love-joy coupler, I would put a stiff rubber hose around it that was the outside size of the coupler, and hose clamp it while adjusting the shaft straight. Tightening the hose clamps and adjusting so when the engine is turned by hand (((not started))) the shaft stays straight. I would use a dial indicator to do that, but very careful measurement from a stable tractor casting will do. Once straight, and held, I would position the U channel with pump to be perpendicular to the shaft, and aligned. setting its distance to allow for the coupler to pump shaft distance. I imagine this will require wooden blocks and clamps to adjust the metal to be square and solid. Then I would proceed to attach the channel to the material using fabricated tabs that I bolted to the structure so the welding of the tabe holds the channel where it is. Then remove the wooden blocking. Jim

If the pump needs to be that far away from the crank pulley, it will need 2 flex couplings, one at the pulley, one at the pump, and a stronger mount plate.

That type coupling has limited angular misalignment, it's not like a U joint.

Be careful what you attach the mount plate to. If there is any flexing due to engine toque or frame stress from the loader, it can change the alignment under load.

Another option, if you can shorten the shaft, get the pump as close to the crank pulley as possible, and find a factory built shaft adapter made for that engine, you can hang the pump directly on the shaft with no flex coupling. The pump is then mounted with only a flexible bracket to prevent it from spinning. This allows the pump to self align, not effected by frame flexing or fixed miss alignment.

I used to align coupling with dial indicators, then in later years used a roto-lign lase alignment tool, with a computer to do the thinking for you. We always tried to align to .002 or better. Alignment is a complex procedure that I can't explain in a paragraph or 2. Like someone else said you need 2 flexible coupling on a shaft like that, and they need to have pilots to keep them centered. I think double roller chain couplings have been used for pumps like that. It's not like they run high speed or 24/7 like the equipment I worked on.

This pump is at least 30 yrs old, the pump is 22GPM and has a 7/8" shaft and the engine has a 1" shaft coming off flywheel end, VH4D Wisconsin 30 hp. I used 2 twelve tooth #50 roller chain sprockets and double chain and has not worn out yet!

I bought the crankshaft adapter that goes to it, but there's no place to get much closer. Forgot to mention it's on a MF-65 GAS tractor.

Terramite uses a yoke made with two u joints.
Boys at terracorp said not to perfectly align the shafts. They said the u joints need to flex or they could freeze up.

I would eyeball the coupler you are using. Listen for vibration.
Good luck.
