What defines being a loyalist to a tractor brand?

Is it not owning one product of another brand? Having a certain percentage of a given brand on your farm? Is it owning what are the classic models of a given brand and nothing else? I have a fleet of mostly JD and IH products and a sprinkling of other brands (mostly Oliver-White). I'll have to do a tally just to know exactly but I would say that I am just about evenly split in terms of IH and JD in terms of machine units. In terms of dollar value I am definitely JD heavy. I dream of adding tractors for collecting purposes of all the domestic brands. Some more than others. I remember belonging to a tractor club years ago and being asked if I disliked IH products. I could not understand how somebody reached that conclusion. There has been at least 2 IH tractors here for quite a long time. Quite a number of IH implements of which quite a few are still here and some that have moved on. And the people asking often did not have anymore IH tractors than what I had and no implements in some cases. It does not bother me but just makes me curious as to how people think about things.

In my opinion the relationship with a dealer is the critical element in loyalty. When a dealer cares (especially about the medium/small farmer) the loyalty becomes glue. When the dealership gets bigger than its britches, things go down hill fast. Another factor has been the consolidation and closing of dealerships such that either the above snotty attitude becomes the norm, or the location closes forcing a change to a closer competitor. Today, the availability of on line parts makes brands less dealership centric. Jim

Green here the last 30 years due to service and support. When it comes to old tractors I am color blind. I have almost one of every major brand and actually have more IH tractors then JD.

I do not consider myself a loyalist , but I don't think any other name fits either ? so I don't know what I am ! lol. But right now my tractor fleet ( 14 ? ) is all John Deere. From a 1936 B model to a 2000 5105 with loader. My riding lawnmower is from the early 1990's a F725 and I even have a silver model push mower and a newer green one too. I keep thinking about getting another lawn mower as it is the machine I use the most. I just do not think I would like what choices are out there for what I do regardless of the brand ? I would not be opposed to a Kubota as I had some in the past.

I get the dealership angle but what goes into what a group of farmers think when they meet for breakfast at the diner? Kind of like sports. Are you not a fan if you are not wearing at least one item of clothing or a hat of a given team. Do you have to hate another team?

I had nearly all IH, JI Case or CaseIH, but things changed in the post merger world. My local Dealer dropped the CaseIH brand, in favour of Kubota. I was sceptical at first, but have several Kubota pieces on the farm now. A dealer that works for you is an asset. Other dealerships, I went to, even though I was looking to buy new equipment, they just didn?t want to be bothered with me. Their loss. I am not stupid about it, but dealer loyalty is important, just as much as brand. They should all work good when new!

Is it sacrilege to have a JD loader on an IH tractor? I have a chance as of a few days ago to pickup a Super M that has a JD 45 loader on it. Tractor does not run but I could trade some work to get it then get it running later. It may need a radiator. If I am successful then I would have 3 IH tractors, 3 JD tractors, an Oliver, and a Ford. Back to the Super M the gentleman is going to let me know within the next week as to the specific deal he will propose.

5th generation farmer down south has all new Green .
Another farmer has all shinny red Case IH.

I consider these full time farmers. not someone that needs a job to farm with old equipment.

They farm many acres. Fifth generation farmer went to Purdue and there's a road what has his last name.
Family farm has been around for over 100 years

Nearly invisible sneers of superiority. Low level kidding. And statements like How far did you have to go to get that threshing bar? Jim

For most of us it is the brand we grew up with. I have a neighbor who grew up with off breeds but will never own a Deere. A brother in law grew up red and will never own green. Some guys had a bad experience with one model of one brand and now are deathly against anything pertaining to that brand.

I am almost certainly a loyalist simply because my interest is in one brand. An not just tractors, but the entire line on the farm. I won't be happy til the lineup is finished as I'm still missing some pieces. When it's complete I'll farm everything with just one brand. That's not to say I don't appreciate some of the things from other brands, in fact once my case collection is complete there will be an Oliver and Allis on the farm too. And I do recognize the shortcomings of some of the pieces I have, but that is irrelevant as what ever case made is what I'll use.

I have all of the Big 3. John Deere, Case IH and Ford.

It depends on the need and price for the most part.

The previous JD dealer wouldn?t deal unless you were one of the 10,000 acre farmers. And they don?t buy, they lease.

So I bought two Case IH 110 C Good machines. No complaints.

The new JD dealer now will deal with us smaller farmers and I ended up with a 6120. Another good machine.

Service plays a huge part. If I have a machine down I need it repaired ASAP. So far, the Case dealer is the most responsive.

I am definitely a loyalist as we have almost all Deere tractors and implements. Growing up Dad bought and sold tractors and machinery and I have used about every color but still prefer the Deere 10 and 20 series tractors. We have 13 right now (a few of those will be sold if I ever get them thru the shop). There are just very few Deere things that I have found that I did not like. There is very few Deere items that I would like to own that I do not already have so I am branching out into some other brands. I do have an Allis D15 as the first tractor I ever drove alone was one. Might someday get a 190XT as grandfather had a new one. I do collect a few pieces of forage equipment of other brands like an IH 650 chopper,IH 56 blower, Allis 780 chopper and Allis silage wagon. A Case 930-1030 would be neat to own and maybe a Case 300 chopper. Tom

My dad and grandad obtained a CASE franchise in 1932. I was born in 1947. My wife and I continued the dealership until 1986. I have long and deep CASE roots, but after the merger and the Red guys got their claws in, the company lost it's compassion for it's dealers, and decisions were based on market share and quotas, and had little to do with local market trends and the ag economy. I like my Case heritage, but not a fan of the CASE-IH brand when Case tractors turned RED.--------Loren

We have been more leaning to the IH tractors over the years. We have had a couple of Cases 830 gas and 630 diesel,Massey Harris 44 way back. Before that it was an Ih H and the old Caterpillar first a Sixty then a D-4 diesel. With the doodlebug. Then the H. The Last H and the D-4 are still here the rest have been added since . The Cases and M-H are gone now. I was out west cutting wheat when I got introduced to the JD tractors It was a 4850 then a 4955 liked both for the ease of operation and ergonomics getting in and out and operating. Much nicer than my old 06 56 66 series IH's to get on and off of.
As for dealer loyalty that has been not much in the way of particular dealer. We do have a dog from every town about for implements. IH,JD,White,Oliver,Sunflower,GP,NI,Glencoe. Buy from who ever has the best deal at the time. Warranty has not been worth the paper it was written on so don't worry about them.

I'm a loyal JD buyer that's what I grew up on and stuck to it. JD equipment has been very reliable to us and when I need parts I dont have to go very far.

Grew up using AC and Oliver but I own a lot of different brands now.If its a good usable tractor at a bargain price I'll bite.Had several IH tractors never really had one I liked and kept until I traded for the Industrial 464 I have now.Never kept any JD tractors as someone always was willing to pay more for the ones I had than they were
worth to me.I'm not married to any machine.

mostly comes down to what parents had and the dealer color in area at that time my color was oliver green, then that PHASED OUT jd green came to area as of now it seems scenery is becoming case ih red in big way I still have the olivers my parents had and i grew up on

Yes, KIDDING it isn't. Actually years back I saw a IH with a Deere loader, was newer than the M. It fits, long as it works good then its all good.

I used to be all John Deere, despite my family being into IH and a little Allis. As i have matured, i do like all brands. Deere is my favorite still, IH close second Allis close third then the rest. Always liked Silver Kings as well. They are all good at this point. Think loyalty depends on what dad, grandad and others purchased and used on their farms. Although used for hard work, these men and women created bonds with their machines. My big three is Deere, IH and Allis and have fond memories of using each brand.

Being truly loyal to a brand means that no matter how many you have of no matter how many brands, they are all painted the same color.
