The year 2061

I remember reading a short story about this same topic 40 years ago in high school. Gold only has value because we put value on it. If you could come up with a formal to create gold out of ingredients in a lab. There would soon be so much gold floating around it would have no more value than sand.

I saw an interview with an oil tycoon some years ago, he was selling all his oil ventures and investing in water sources in the american west, felt there was a limited supply that was being used at a fast rate.

People that have no Gold have been saying the same thing since the beginning of recorded time, meanwhile back here in real life its always the one thing that people have fell back on in times of economic and other crisis,as of late its been China buying Gold big time.Anyone think the Chinese are monetary fools? Gold is the standard that has been around forever and will be valued long after any paper or computer generated in circulation today has been cast into the dust bin of history.Name a couple currencies that were in general circulation in the year 1500.How are they doing today? Meanwhile Gold and Silver were currencies named in the Bible and are still here today holding their value.

EXACTLY!
I laugh everytime time I hear one of those buy gold ads, "your money can be made worthless!! Buy gold!! And how to they value that gold? In that worthless money they talk about. Also laugh when I talk to some doomsdayer that stashes Gold becaise his money will be worthless. I love to tell them that if that happens and we are all starving that I would not trade my last food for a truckload of gold.

Not saying that investing in gold or owning a bit of it is a bad idea but it surely is not the answer to financial security in all events that some claim it to be when one spends just a bit of thought on the subject.

The starving people in Venezuela right today would disagree with you, their currency is worthless and have no means to buy any food that could be easily be imported
IF they had a means to pay for it.Gold and Silver would buy food for them if they'd of had the foresight to of traded their currency for some when their currency had some value, most didn't so now many are dying of starvation in the street.

I did not say that owning gold is foolish, i own a little but not because I think its going to carry me through a financial crisis where FRNs are worthless. Anyone who keeps all of thier assets in FRNs is indeed a fool! That we agree on. I do however stand by what I said and thank you for the example. Without a doubt there are people in that country with gold and what will that gold buy them in a store with bare shelves? Place yourself there. There is little to no food to be purchased so what does your gold hoard do for you? What starving person is going to trade their only food for a couple flakes of gold? Maybe a couple pounds of it??? LOL.

Four types of money.
Gold--the money of royalty
Silver--- the money of gentlemen
Paper---the money of fools
Credit---the money of slaves.

Might also add Images on a computer screen---the money of suckers

A classic episode! The SYFY channel runs the entire Twilight Zone series over New Years Eve through New Years Day so I get my fill of those stories and sometimes even see one I had never seen before. The futuristic car in this episode was borrowed from MGM's back lot storage. It was the same vehicle Robby Robot used to haul Leslie Nielsen and Ann Francis around on The Forbidden Planet 6 years earlier.

As far as gold retaining its value in the future and you must buy it NOW, NOW, NOW! I'm always suspicious of hucksters trying to sell you some commodity that is "guaranteed" to rise exponentially in the future. IF you had shares of some stock that will rise 1000% over the next year, would you sell it to me at yesterdays closing price? Why not keep your gold and wait until youre a billionaire all by yourself?

It doesnt seem a very good business model to sell off your product BEFORE it rises in value, but maybe theyre not in the business to make money.... Besides, if the type of economic and societal collapse comes along that these people have been breathlessly predicting for decades, a room full of gold will be worth exactly the price of one well placed bullet.

Gold for the mistress
And Silver for the maid
Copper for the journeyman
Cunning at his trade.
Yes , said the Baron
Sitting in his hall,
But Iron , cold iron
Is the master of them all.

Essentially all the metal on earth, including iron and gold, was formed in stars. As did most of the other elements. As Joni Mitchell said, we are stardust.

Any tractors in the twilight zone?

There are tractors in the Twilight Zone. They are manufactured by a firm call [color=red:f1452e32d8]FARM[/color:f1452e32d8].

All tractors are equipped with a man lift, as the men using these machines are missing limbs. Arms, legs, sometimes their very souls. These extreme machines have to be paid for somehow.

The only fuel they require is a man in the operators seat, slowly leeching his own dignity into the bowels of the machine. Sitting, staring blankly ahead at land that no longer belongs to him, but rather to the very same manufacturer that made his tractor.

This is a tractor, in [b:f1452e32d8]The Twilight Zone[/b:f1452e32d8]

That was a good episode, it has played a few times in the last year.

Gold is valuable because it is difficult to get. It?s Supply remains a constant, slow growth, while earthing else fluctuates.

If the earth were made of gold, men would die for a handful of dirt.
Gary Cooper quote from the movie Garden of Evil, 1954

Hi Mark .... yes, Joni Mitchell wrote that song I believe ..... my favorite version of it though is the one by Southern Comfort. Quite a few groups sang it, Crosby, Still, Nash and Young also come to mind. Here's the link, I always found the melody very "haunting" which best describes it for me.

You're right on that point Bruce. My dad used to say that you can only put a price on something that is scarce or on something which you can make scarce somehow.
