Poison Ivy that is. Hardly ever got it as a kid, but all my adult life the stuff finds me. Dealing with a pretty good case on my arm right now, I'm sure it was in the dirt and roots where I'm hand digging footers. I have my ways of treating it but was curious about how others deal with the rash.

I've gotten the same kind of rash from contact with lichens attached to some wood I've been burning. Over the counter stuff works a bit but the itching comes back within an hour or so. My infected areas are beet red and a burning feeling along with the itch. Mine managed to get spread a lot from my arms before figuring out what was happening.

I?m not able to self-treat it anymore. Too many bad exposures, now the doctor just has to give me a steroid. I?ve even got a few scars from really bad run-ins. These days I?ve gotten really good at spotting it even in winter and I treat everything I touch anywhere within 25 feet of a plant like it has poison ivy on it.

I can normally knock it down with antihistamines (Benadryl etc), if that doesn't work, I make a trip to the doctor for steroids.

I've heard from someone on here that if a goat eats poisen ivy and you drink its milk you will become immune to it..ps.Im just the messenger

I use Listerine unflavored mouth wash on poison ivy. I rub it because it itches, than I dab it with Listerine. If it burns, it's working. That's what I do but I can't get the wife do that.

for some reason poison ivy doesnt bother some people as much as others -- Up here in northwest Iowa We have itchweed -- it loves crick sides- gets a yellow flower and after that it will burn you - dont know the real name for this weed but I do stay clear of it -- Roy

Hyseed,

I rub lotion int my skin before I get into it. Seems that ivy oils don't penetrate as deep. Alson, I use fels napths soap to wash up. It seems to get things (oils) off me a bit cleaner.

I am sympathetic. I get the ivy year round somehow,

D.

Not bothered by it...my dermatologist says he didn't get it either when he was younger, but has it now.

Walmart, Walgreens carry it. Works great. I don't leave home without it in car, truck.

I keep some all over. If I feel the burning, rub it on. Should wash it off. Do that later.

I went 55 plus years could about eat it no problem then one day I got it bad... Your body changes is all I could come up with...

The same with penicillin I took for as long as I can remember then one day haft way thru a prescription I had a allergic reaction...

There are 2 things to treating poison ivy. The "poison" is Urushiol oil, it is a sticky oil that can get on you or anything that touches the ivy. It can linger on clothes or tools for a year or more.

First you need to remove any urushiol oil on your skin. It takes a decent powered soap to do this, since a shower is probably best you might use a good liquid dish soap like blue dawn. If you've been working in it, and are allergic, you will already get it, but the soap will help remove the rest of the oil to prevent further spreading.

Second thing is treating the rash, mainly because it can itch fiercely. Any over the counter rash/itch medicine should work. these help with the itching and also drying the rash out. Nothing is going to make it go away though as fast as you would like. Some products work better for some people and not others and there are dozens of home remedies etc.

Oh, one more thing, don't forget to wash your clothes and anything else that has been in contact with poison ivy, tools, saws, steering wheel etc. Cleaners that work good on oil and grease , just make sure it's safe to apply on what you clean.

I forgot and it's already been mentioned, but Benadryl should help too. I used to get it real bad. Do not go potty if you are out in the stuff, if you need to use the bathroom, don't, haha. I used to always go to a doctor and get the steroids and whatever rash cream they prescribed. Anyway I hardly get it at all anymore, still do but not bad. Strangely when I get it now, it's usually only a few spots on my forearms and small of the back. I heard there was a nnalert in the works, but not sure when it will be released, that can be a game changer if it's effective.

I never could get it, even rubbing it on my skin. I am thinking like you. Someday I may get it bad.
I walked away from a mowing job, because of the stuff. Stan

I?m apparently one of the lucky ones (so far) that poison ivy doesn?t affect. I?ve been in the same place, doing the same things as others. Walking though ivy patches, touching the leaves, etc. They get a rash, I don?t. Not sure why but that is how it has been.

Same thing happened to my Grandma. She was 65 one spring & notice strange itching on her ankles after working her beehives. She'd always been able to rip it out with her hands & couldn't believe she could suddenly be allergic to it. She was always allegic to it after that. I've always been allergic to it. Rarely get it anymore because I look for it.

I've heard old timers say that the Indians would eat the first tiny leaves in early Spring to get immunity. They wouldn't let the leaves touch their lips but put it straight into their mouths. Never had the nerve to try it nor heard of anyone else who did.

When I was putting in my emergency room time for EMT there were a number of Poison Ivy cases that came in. They all said the same thing: They had been exposed to it four days earlier and it kept getting worse. If they had waited one more day it would have been nearly gone.

I am extremely affected by poison ivy. To many stories
go bother telling....

TECNU used by the directions is a great product and the only
method that is effective.

I have tried every home remedy including
Doctor prescribed baths in Chlorine bleach.......btw good for chemical burns
not so good for a cure :<

This is not a joke i had it on my arms a friend told me to rub PREPARATION H on it dried up within a day.

I used unscented Ban roll on antiperspirant for poison ivy relief.
Aint a cure all but made it much easier to deal with.

Actually, I use it on bug bites, wasp/hornet stings, shingles blisters.

No, I do not use the same tube for my armpits.

HTH don t.

I got a mild case one time as a kid. Haven't been bothered with it since. Donno if I am immune to it or just lucky in avoiding it. Dont make any particular efforts to look out for it, and if I haven't run into it in the past 60 years...
