I'm in the market for a new shop seat. The one I have has casters with flat spots and I've had to weld the frame back together numerous times. Over the years I've used everything from old office chairs to buckets to sit on. We work on this old iron for enjoyment, right? Might as well be comfortable. I want something with a padded seat, large casters that won't get stuck on a rock, and adjustable height. And the base needs to be wide enough that it doesn't want to tip over if you back up and the wheel gets stuck on the air hose (NOT fun). I'm up for building my own if I can find some good ideas. What you got in your shop?

Nothing special, just an adjustable seat on wheels.

I could see starting with something like it, adding a wider base with some flat free casters for use on rough surfaces. Want to keep it low though so it doesn't tend to tip.
Rolling Seat

I have one that is just a cheap lawn mower seat with a flat steel X, with 4 casters on it,it sets about 3 inches off the floor. I have an old office chair without the back and arms, and one of those $19.99 adjustable seats with a parts tray under it. All told I think there are 5 in the shop and total cost is $19.99. I dumpster dive a lot.

Just a hint. Get an old office chair with five not four wheels. Much more stable and rolls around easier.

It looks like Steve has your answer. For that kind of money and if your time is worth anything the price is right. There is the added bonus of a place for tools, parts, beverage (or maybe that is just a replacement/replenishment part for the human body), etc.

That's what I use. I went dumpster diving. A tenant threw it away in my dumpster.

I took some old metal antique tractor seats. Welded a 2 inch pipe seat. Then welded pipe to a large disk. They were a pain to move, so my daughter now has them in her art studio.

I no longer need a shop seat. I lost a critical part of my anatomy on the last tractor project when I attempted to upgrade an IHC 986. Now I just work in a standing position.

I see what you did there. ;)

Fourteen years ago I asked the transfer station operator to watch for something like an office chair that I could turn into a wheel around seat. He got me one that has a ring around it to put your feet on. It has five castor wheels. I removed the arms and back and it has been working great for these fourteen years. I suppose I should think about cleaning the cloth upholstery.

Was watching the harmless farmer one day and got a kick out of his shop seat. It?s amazing what he can do from that chair. Maybe you can get some idea from it and build your own.

I bought this stool several years ago because the smaller castors pulled loose from the tool tray and would fold under sideway acting as a brake.

I've been happy with my shop seat from HF.

Padded round top, adjustable height, wide bottom with compartments, rolls easily. I recall it was about $30.

Just love to dumpster dive. You dont even need air tanks. Well unless that is what you are diving for. :)
