Age of a chicken.

This just came to me while cooking breakfast. how long will a chicken live? If she simply dies of old age if left to 'live out her days'.

Iv had them live from 3 to as long as 5 or 6 years, that?s rare though, I have hens for eggs, no roosters.

We have had, and currently do have, chickens over 10 years old. They are not much use for anything but they are show birds we kept for breeding and became attached to. Turkeys about the same. Geese over 20 years old on the place right now. I have had racing pigeons live as long as 16 but at that age the advent of winter seems to be too much and they go. I think in warmer climes they would keep on going.

My mom has two hens and a rooster that are right at about 10 years old next month. I know they are that old because my kids used to take poultry to the county fair and we would always order the baby chicks in January through the post office. Now these three chickens are really good for nothing except for eating a few bugs, but they make nice yard ornaments. The hens are so old that they MIGHT lay one egg a month and a few years ago I tried to incubate a few of them without success. The breed is Java, a gentle black bird that really has a nice sheen on their feathers when the sun shines on them.

We haven't had a bird last more than 5 years. They have the run of the place and it seems our older birds both hens and roosters get to about 4 or 5 and they disappear. Something grabs them no doubt, we have coyotes, wolf, raccoons and hawks and eagles in our area. Sometimes we find feathers and whats left of them but other times they're just gone.

This is kind of a kick, we had a raccoon get into our coop one night through a screen vent. We could tell by the prints IN the coop on top of the nesting boxes, he went in the vent on one side and busted out the other side vent, both about 6 ft high. Didn't lose a single bird and we had 20 in there, 3 roosters the rest hens. I would have loved to have a cam in there to see just what the heck went on!

We had chickens over 12 years old.I had a Holstein cow live to be 21 years old. ( became a pet after six years) Thought that may of been a record but I believe almost 49 years is the record for a milk cow

Had a little Buttercup hen that died last summer. She had to have been 14 or 15 years old. She laid a big white egg, but very few of them in recent years. She was peculiar in that she would sit on the nest in the winter and keep other eggs from freezing.

That was funny. Now every time i got to KFC Ill have to ask myself I wonder how old was that chicken i just ate

Actually the majority of fast food chicken is less the 4 months old.
Production egg laying chickens from birth to end of use were they become soup meat is less than 2 years.
