No TV in the kitchen

I like to watch the news when I am eating my meals in the kitchen, is about the only time I watch TV anymore. That's about all I can take. I moved the TV a little today, and the TV box fell into the dog, and cat's water dish. No TV for a couple days, until the company sends me another box. Wife has her TV I the living room. I am probably not the only one who remembers when TV's were not around. I was probably 8 or 9 when we got our first TV. I remember it was always being worked on. Stan

Stan , we got our first TV in 1954. I would rush home from school every day to see if had arrived. One day I walked home and didn't bother to look , finally my mother said there is something in the living room for you..there it was. very exciting to a 9 year old.

We got a tv to watch the moon landing . Dad made a tv antennae from tv twin down-lead. I remember him tuning in the pic from the moon. It was black and white which worked as the moon dosent have too much color to it.

I was about 7 or 8 when we got a color TV. No telling what dad paid for that thing, color TV broadcast was just coming on the market. I remember the picture tube was round on the sides, flat on top and bottom. It was a major piece of furniture, about 6 feet wide, big speaker grills on each side with a 4" speaker hidden behind each one!

It was constant trouble, always something wrong with it. Had a bank of orange glowing tubes, took it a couple minutes to come on and start working. You could smell the tubes heating up.

That was when the repairman came to the house. Of course I was right there watching his every move, asking what did what. I remember one telling me not be adjusting the color pots (like he was doing with a mirror). "OK, I promise I won't!" Yeah, right...

About once a month I would have the back off, spraying the tuner with contact cleaner.

There was a fine tuning knob on front that had to be adjusted every time the channel was changed. It got so loose it had to be constantly thumped or pulled out and released. I had a string tied to it so I could thump it without getting up! LOL

I got a color TV (my first) to watch the moon landing. How was I to know it was broadcast in B&W. Good excuse to get a color TV, though.

Remember not too long ago when a 19" diagonal TV was kinda the standard ? Now I'm watching a 50" & can see every hair folicle during extreme close-ups.

I have had TV almost all my life. Born in 46, my father had a half interest in "Home Appliance" store. They sold radios, washers, Singer sewing machines and whatever. We lived and still do in Winamac Indiana, about 100 miles fron Chicago too far for TV reception. In 1947 dad and his radio repairman, who was in Signal Corp WW II in Germany ( darn smart guy) built a 70 ft. tower on the roof of the store. It worked brought the first Television to town. Wasn't much on back then but he proved it worked. Sold a lot of those big 8 and 10 inch sets. I remember Mom watching the Cubs play while she ironed. joe

We had a big box with legs,Mr Day was out every once in awhile to fix it. We moved in to the new house in 1961 and shortly after, it quit twice in a week. Then it turned into a big box in a blonde cabinet. Our first color set was around 1974. Mom told her boss not to give her a bonus that year, just give her a tv.Went from a 19" B&W to a 22" color,I have bought a lot of cars that cost less.

We thought in the late 70's we were on top of the world we got a T.V. from the neighbors that they didn't want any longer. It had both UHF and VHF still Black and White. Later dad got a color model. Don't remember just when probably in the 80's. All were tubes except the color one.

We got our's in 54 or 55 too, the guy had a new 54 Ford stat1on wagon,I know that,i think it was 55 dollars,for a RCA Victor!

(quoted from post at 20:23:38 12/10/19) I like to watch the news when I am eating my meals in the kitchen, is about the only time I watch TV anymore. That's about all I can take. We used to have a TV in the dining area, then the cable "provider" that our town gives a license to steal went digital with a locked down little box for $4 a month to make it all work out.

We didn't play that game.

About 1962, a 21 inch black and white, but all we could get was 1 Canadian channel, There was no US broadcast in our area until the early 70's. Wife and I got married in 73, we each had a 12 inch B&W, got our first 19 inch color in 76, a big investment!

We used to watch TV more, but commercials end it for me - short attention span, I guess. If they shut down the TVs nationwide, I wouldn't notice.

We have three TVs in this house. We used to try to catch the weather each morning, but now they drag it out - a little now, then a little more thirty minutes later, then a little more even later. Kiss my foot. I can turn on my computer and get the weather instantly, without having to listen/watch all of that other garbage.

Sorry about the rant. . .

We only have one tv in the house, and that?s in the living room. I know that?s probably rare nowadays! Sometimes I just like quiet and I get aggravated at how little the tv shows are compared to the time spent on commercials!

No TV in my house for almost ten years. I only miss it during Football season, and only when my team is doing OK. I'm a Redskins fan so it hasn't been a problem.

The most used button on my TV remote is the mute button, most every commercial gets it.
I still remember building a HeathKit color TV, model GR-900 was it? It got burned up in the first house fire. Wonderful homebuilder, less than a year old and up in smoke.

Our first remote had ultrasonic doorbell chimes that went "Tunk" "Tunk" when pressed. It actvated a motor with chain drive that turned the channel's rotary tuner knob.

COLOR TV
it was the show bonanza

those early sony's could take the end of a screwdriver off discharging the HV circuit

trinitrons weigh a ton

first cable box had a rotary tuner knob

I did free to air and tracked satellites for a while

hacked satellite providers for a while (all 1000 channels free)

I watched PlutoTV yesterday

I stream now mostly and the monitor is big screen size

bought a monitor once that had a P in P tv tuner

3 TVs here too.

One in the living room that SWMBO has tuned to the various news channels 18 hours a day. I rarely even slow down on my way by, much less watch that crap.

Her brother lives with us and has one in his room. Not sure what all he watches, but he has a satellite box too.

One in my bedroom, not even hooked to the satellite. I stream Netflix and Amazon Prime on it. No news, no commercials and most of the time a reasonable selection of programming I'm actually interested in.

Wife has 3 tvs 1 in living room,1 in utility room and 1 in bedroom. If all 3 quit id smile n turn my am fm rdio on n listen to the music.we got a few stations that play non stop music.i do watch the METV channel but its not a big item to me.news is bs and weather, get on the innertube n get it quick or turn my amature radios on n hear uswb

To each their own but I'm not about to put a damper on my meal by listening to the so called news. I rarely turn the TV on at all.

I have one in the kitchen and living room,, I use to watch the news at supper time,,but not any more,,"Fake News" is the reason not to,,I watch Matlock now at 6PM,, RFD at Noon...and yes these commercials now days are awful...and take up 1/3 of the shows,,,I would rather deal with a twisted off bolt than watch a commercial....

Between the entertainment getting less impressive and the commercials getting longer I often forget what show was on before the commercials end.

I cut the cable years ago. Now, all I have is Netflix and Amazon Prime TV. Love it! no commercials, you can pause it, rewind it, replay it, skip ahead, or however you want to watch it.

Also don't have to wait until next week for the next episode of your favorite shows. Best improvement in TV in my lifetime!

I cut the cable quite some time ago about all I watched from that point was local news on a digital antenna.

My niece gave me a Roku I now stream off of WiFi free TV and amazon prime. I got someones cable password and can live stream nascar races and such : )...

I am now watching The Men Who build America I can pick and chose when and where I want to watch it even on a cell phone if I wanted to...

Redskins games I go on the net and watch the highlights in 5 min. Hale to the redskins those young players are interesting to watch... Feetball is a touchy subject I cannot get away from the skins my son is an Skins Hog thru and thru he keeps me updated...

our first TV was around 1955--it was a motorola black and white--what i remember most is that the majority of time the box cabinet was off it as it had to be repaired so often

A bit off topic but I find it interesting these days that a lot of people sort of "brag" about not having a television set, almost like they are too intelligent to own one. Well, that's up to them, I could care less, but I don't want to hear about it. I don't have a $60,000 daily driver but I don't brag to anyone about our 2002 Dodge Caravan .... ha !!!

Michael ..... I think you live in Alberta right? Yup, October of 1954 it was, CFRN channel 3, at first it didn't come on for weekday viewing till 6 PM, not sure about the weekends. I remember running home from school and watching the test pattern, the big Indian head with all the circles and numbers, those were the days.

If I didn't have a TV, how elese could I watch Fatricia destroy the Lions? If he isn't the worst coach they ever had, I'd like to know who is. I think there should be a new law; you can't carry a pencil in your ear unless you can write.

I can still remember the first tv dad bought. Think it was a Fairbanks Morse. 2 channels of snowy black and white entertainment. We thought it was the greatest thing ever.

Dad bought our first TV in '55 or '56.
One good channel.......another "sometimes" when the weather was right.
It was a Raytheon....not a common brand but a very good company and leader in electronics yet today.
Probably most famous for the Microwave oven and is now a leader in national defense and homeland security technology.

I have still pics of the TV screen during the landing...just moved in to my first apt, had no furniture, so the 12 inch tv sat on the floor. Pics of Nixon on the phone, first landing steps, etc. July 19-20?, 1969.

If you went for a few years without a tv you would begin to see the negative effects it has on people. Shorter attention span, more emotion driven than reason driven, quick to tire when having to think for themselves, irritable when having to formulate a rational argument rather than just spouting off a sound bite they heard on tv, considering themselves somewhat an expert on a topic because they saw a program on the history channel or on Frontline. Television causes mental laziness. Physical laziness too. People who exercise their bodies tend to look down on those who are couch potatoes. People who exercise their minds through reading tend to look down on people who never read and get all their info from the tv. The negative effects of television are insidious. You don't see or feel it happening. But the effects are there.
If you went for a year or two without a tv you would start to look at those around you as intellectually lazy and uncurious. You might even start to feel a sense of superiority.

You'll get no argument from me on what you say, but at this stage of the game I don't think I'm gonna throw out my TV's so I become smarter .... ha! I guess one could argue the same thing about computers, do they dull a person down as well? Why not, same principal, information overload from who knows where and who knows how much truth to all of it. I can now say that I read a post on a tractor forum that explained how negative TV was on the population ..... LOL !!!

Think about this:
It took 10? maybe 50 times the mental energy and brainpower for you to compose the thoughtful reply you just made than it takes to watch an hour of tv.
Lot of mind wasting crap on the internet.
But telling a fellow how to get spark to his Farmall H is mentally invigorating.

Yes, I have one in the kitchen...My Dad got our first one about 1951, Emerson in Bakelite(?)case, about 12" screen. Very reliable. He installed antennas for that tv store. 25 years later, I was installing tv antennas, also repairing tv's. Just out of the USAF and right when color tv's hit the market. Watched three good programs today. 'How the world(continents)was Formed', 'San Andreas Fault and 'The Great Lakes Formation'. On VICE Network.

I know, but at least Belichick can write and coach and win. Plus he is smart enough to get his assistants hired as head coaches so there are several teams he knows he won't have to face in the Supper Bowl. As usual, the Lions selected one of the worst.

Makes me miss my own little Rat.
She was 5 when I got her and I had her for about 12 years. I keep thinking I'll get another one. Haven't for 6 years though.
I almost posted on the thread about the cattle dog catching the mouse a day or two ago. Mine was a killer for sure and I could tell some funny stories about her with squirrels, chipmunks and the like.
She was named Kisses when I got her.
I renamed her George. She didn't mind.
Got a photo of yours?

I have 4 now they are not much for catching rats did have one years ago named Buck that was the best rat and mouse killer I have ever seen so fast and quick at it
none of the others had a chance to catch one.You need to get another one no dog like them as far as I'm concerned.
