December Hay

I laid down 30 acres of jiggs last night. I'll be laying down 140 acres of Bahia today. Last cutting of the year!

A lot of people here who were sitting pretty with lots of hay early on lost it all during Imelda.

I call this last cutting dumb money. The horse people around here have it their head that the 3rd or 4th cutting is
worth paying more for!

Horse owners never cease to amaze me with the idea's they come up with.

I owned/rode horses from '58-'96. I liquidated my horses when I got disabled. I had an older mare that would impact(get constipated) if I fed her Bermuda hay. Vet told me to feed her Johnson grass & she died of old age eating JG hay. Current horse hay buyers tell me JG hay can give horse diabetes & Prussic acid poisoning. Granted JG can get PA poisoning but PA will dissipate from baled hay in about 30 days.

How much are you pricing this Dec hay for???

Horse people will inspect a field before cutting due to Johnson grass concerns. I spray mine so no issues.

This cutting jiggs 4 x 5 rolls $60. Bahia 4 x 5 $40.

Prior to this it was $50 and $35.

All is sprayed and fertilized.

Was the Jiggs green or had it had frost on it?

I sure wish you were closer to me I would come get some for that price, hay around here in Central Texas is 75 to 100 a roll.

Very nice!

We were hoping for a Thanksgiving hay cutting, but the grass never materialized and the weather wasn?t good either, so we?re done.

There is a severe shortage of hay here, especially quality small square bales. I?ve got about 150 left, hopefully to be sold this weekend. People are contacting my from 80 miles away telling me I?m the only one between me and them with hay. Prices for square bales are north of $7 ea and heading past $10 per bale. It will be interesting to see the price in February.

Good luck,
Bill
