wet and drippy, old school fixit

we've had wet, cold, dry, warm and wet again weather. MF 50 in the metal shed wouldn't start without the hair dryer. The TO 30 in the front yard as part of our Fall decorations fired right up.

Heat gun from HF works even better, more heat. Heat the manifold, then direct the air flow at the air intake. Will start almost immediately in sub-freezing weather. I know, I know- fix the glowplugs. I priced new ones, and decided my fix was better, as little as I use a tractor in cold weather.

Had a '89 Dodge Dakota years ago that started to do that. If the temperature fell below 70 it would not start.
As the morning warmed up it would start. I took my wife's hair dryer and went around to all the components.
Found the distributor's pickup coil was failing. Bought a new one and fixed it.

I'm thinking just not a good seal. We've had temp swings from 26 to 88 in 2 weeks. the past few days have been drizzle and fog. the whole barn is dripping inside

I worked at marina just out of high school.

They had a ratty old army jeep we use to move trailers around, launch boats.

If it were left outside over night, forget about it starting without going through the drying process.

But once it was running, you could drive it into the water to the top of the front wheels and it would never miss a beat!

While this is not a fun way to check it grab the distributor cap and try to start it. BE sure it is out of gear. Some one on here likes to complain about me starting tractors while standing beside them so I'll add the make sure it is out of gear. If while you try to start it you jump 10 feet the distributor cap is bad. Learn that trick the hard way when I was 17 or so year old on a 1971 GMC 250 six that seemed to eat distributor caps

One time years ago my Case 311 wouldn't start. I messed with it all day with no luck. Finally it started getting dark, and a friend dropped by. I asked him to hit the key while I was standing on the other side of the tractor from where I always climb on. As he did, I watched a giant blue spark jump from the top of the coil to the small terminal on the side. It's been long enough now that I don't remember if I replaced the coil or just put another coil wire on it, but I've never had another problem with it.

Never complained about you starting a tractor while standing along side, complained about you preaching safety while bragging that you "always" start a tractor while standing along side!

As i have said hard to trouble shoot and start a tractor while on the seat. So tell me how do you trouble shoot a spark problem with out standing by the tractor it sure cannot be done sitting the seat.

Also do you have any idea why I start my tractor standing beside them??? One should maybe find the reason one does something because saying it is unsafe and the way I do it is ALWAYS safe because I NEVER parka tractor in gear

Only in your mind does it prove anything. It just goes to show you how little you do know when it comes to working on tractors and how to trouble shoot problems

(quoted from post at 12:31:30 12/01/19) Thanks again for proving my point. Hope your tractors enjoy the parka in the winter.

That is the same thing as the thousands of people who have gotten shot by guns that were not loaded, LOL.
