My brother got a UB Moline it was stuck but he got it loose and running turns out the generator is bad the armature is shot he has a good 6 volt generator and wants to know if the 6 volt armature can be installed in the 12 volt one and be made to work as a 12 volt generator Thanks

How far you from St. Cloud? Reds Electric on east St.Germain should be able to fix you up. I had a 6 volt Ford generator converted to 12 volts by having a shop in SD change the 6 volt fields to 12 volt ones and used the 6 volt armature. The guy who did the work said the only thing is it reduced the output slightly.

Reds is a most capable shop. If self doing it and the frames and brush holders match, it will generate. Don't expect to run20 amps of accessories.

Thanks for the replies I'll pass the information on to him and he can decide what he wants to do

Unless he's a real purist, it's not that hard to put an alternator on it. I've got them on both of my UB's.

I don't think he's a purist but just trying to use what is in the shop, if it were mine it would have an alternator in a minute

I changed my UB to a Delco internal regulated 3 wire alternator. One of the big problems now days with a generator is finding a regulator that will last. Alternator from early 80's GM vehicle. I got one from 83 Chevy suburban.

Alternator fits to front of existing generator bracket. I used it and fabricated a bracket for alternator. I used same fan belt.

A gennys armature is more of a current then it is a voltage device and its output depends (among other things) on how many amps of current is passed through the field coils. SO YES ITS POSSIBLE TO USE A COMPATIBLE 6 VOLT ARMATURE IN A 12 VOLT GENERATOR. The Field coils are more important then the armature in determining output although sure BOTH are important.

NOTE I have successfully used non modified 6 volt gennys to charge a 12 volt battery simply by changing to a 12 volt Voltage Regulator Im NOT saying its ideal or perfect Im ONLY saying it works. Its best to have a shop change out the fields and armature if necessary to convert from a 6 to a 12 volt genny.

NOTE your question was NOT about converting to an alternator so I didn't answer a question that wasn't asked...

Thanks all for the replies I talked to my brother this morning told him that he could put the 6 volt armature in the 12 v gen and that it would work probably at reduced output amps, and that he could try just using a 12 volt regulator on the 6 v generator but he didn't think much of that idea also told him the there was suggestions that he go with an alternator but he said he was cheap and didn't want to spend the money I did point out that if he didn't have a good working regulator that an alternator would be cheaper than a good regulator he said he knew that also so we'll see how he makes out
