Problem with steering on IH 966

Every so often, on a cold morning, my old IH 966
will not steer, and no power assist on brakes. My
first thought was hydraulic oil was low, but no not
the case, oil level was right up. Remotes work fine,
so not the pump. I don?t put many hours on this old
tractor anymore, and had changed out the hydraulic
oil less than 300 hours ago. Wondered if some
condensation had frozen and plugged the filter, so
changed the filter, apparently this wasn?t the
problem either. On a warm day, above 32F , no
problem. This morning only 23F , and no steering.
Any ideas?

Easiest and least expensive repair is to over fill the hydraulics by 5 gallons. (it sounds like a massive amount, but in that system it amounts to few inches. The added Hytran covers a oil pickup tube and a Oring in the pump intake that fail and allow air into the MCV system pump. It is a standard fix for the issue. There are other possible failures, but those require far more $ and are less likely. Jim

Bruce, The Oring between the rearend and trans housing gets hard and sucks air and looses prime. Very common on those older IH tractors. As Jim says adding 5 gal over is the easiest way to 'fix'. Doesn't hurt a thing. Remark your dipstick.BTW,My old IH tractors all run 5 over. They seem to work better. Steve

They have two pumps one the hitch pump that is working fine,, the MCV pump is what is losing prime,, oring or gasket bad,, may fix it with out changing the pump I see I still have a new one left from my repair shop days, I sold lots of these pumps int hose days,, always stocked two of these and a Hitch pump and the seal kit Hy Cap sold for them, down to a pump or two is all for IH now though
