John Deere 3020 PTO

Hello all!

Another quick question about my John Deere 3020. Not sure which lever engages the PTO. There are 2 that look alike one each side of the instrument cluster. I have been told one is the PTO, and the other is for cold weather starting. Apparently it sort of "separates" the engine from transmission to allow just the engine to crank over. Wondering, just to make sure, so I don't cause any issues, or end up breaking something, which side is/should the PTO engagement lever on? Left or right sitting on the seat?

The serial number tag has SNT113PO74333R on it. I've read the "SN" is, I guess kinda obviously, serial number. The "T" means Basic Tractor. 1= 3020. 1= Row Crop. 3= Diesel. "P"= Power Shift. 074333= actual serial number. And "R"= Manufactured at Waterloo, Iowa.

Thanks!

Lever at LH side of steering pedestal is the transmission disconnect clutch. Pull it back and it's supposed to latch in the
"disconnect" position until little round knob by your left shin is pulled rearwards to release it. Pull rearwards on the disconnect lever to take pressure off of the release knob mechanism so knob can be pulled, then allow disconnect lever to return forward to engage the disconnect clutch.

PTO clutch is the lever at the right side of the steering pedestal.

I remember while I was employed at JD dealership in the 60'-80's making several service calls that I ended having to engage the trans disconnect lever on LH side of tractor that Bob referred to.

That is one reason I always thought an operator's manual for tractors/equip owned is a very good investment

Did all 3020's have that? I drove my Uncles once about 40 years ago and don't remember anything about that And had it for using the PTO powered forage harvestor. Big thing I trmember about it was going down the road and when I got to my drive I turned the wheel to go in and it just kept sliding the front wheels sideways down the road. Some how the differential lock that I knew nothing about got turned on while I was driving straight down the road after turning on the road at my Uncles place a mile away.

Only 3020/4020 tractors with Powershift trans had the engine disconnect for damper clutch lever on LH side of dash. To disengage diff lock all operator needed to do was briefly push either or both brake pedals.

That setup is only for the powershift tractors. The syncro tractors you pushed in the clutch to eliminate trans. drag and the pto lever was longer and manually engaged not hyd like the powershift was. This is on the early (pre 1969) tractors. Tom

This is why tractors are shipped with operator s manuals . Looks like over the years that some dolt lost the manual . The good news is that a call to 1-800-522-7448 will have a manual shipped to you pronto .

Found out when I got stoped after going past drive backing up to try turning again it had unlocked again. Fords I had later you could not keep that lock on going down the road, required a dectetion of different pull on wheels to keep it locked, as soon as that was not noticed it released. But at the time with the 3020 did not know there was such a thing as a differential lock. The 2 cylinder Deeres did not have that.
