Deer camp 2019.
As usual, cribbage is a part of it.
My poor hunting buddy Mike.
I've beat him soundly the last 2 weekends.
First game last night I skunked him.
Second game he had about a 15 point lead over me the whole game. Bragging and teasing me for all four streets.
Last hand, he had first count and got caught in the stink hole.
I had an 18 hand and beat him. Didn't even need to count my crib.
Tonight we'll go around again.
Big hands, little hands, pegging hard!
Or Not...
Cribbage is a great, fun game that you can tease and boast and taunt your best friend unmercifully. Then take your turn being the loser as the next game he beats you into a pulp.
Fifteen 2, fifteen 4 and... game.

My Mama and Grandmother would play that all the time.
Daddy brought Mama home after WWII and her mother would come over and stay with us sometimes.
I can still here them counting just like that.

A few weeks back in a four-hander, one of the players (not my partner) had a 28 ..... the Jack in his hand didn't match the 5 that was cut. I've never seen a 29, or a 28 for that matter until the one I refer to here. Yes, a fantastic game, kids would love it if they would take the time to learn it ..... lots of cribbage sites to play on the internet but it's not the same. There are some counts that don't seem to happen that often, your 18 would be one of them I think. Maybe even a 17 doesn't happen that often? Some counts are impossible of course, like 19, 25, 26, and 27). I've read quite often some cribbage forum Q & A's .... and although some people play the same set of rules, now and then some guys have a rule that I don't agree with. For example, one guy I know insists that you can't win a game by turning up a Jack for the cut card. I think the official crib rules say that is a legal win.

Haven't played in years. Maybe time to get the board out again. Wife and I used to play a couple of times a week. I think we stayed about even. Thanks for the reminder. ;^)

My younger brother was having some math problems in grade school.
Several of us played cribbage and he wanted to learn how. So over Xmas vacation,
Mother taught him how. When school started in January, his teacher called Mother
to ask what she did to teach him math so fast.
Mother explained she taught him how to count for cribbage.
Teacher said good!! What ever it takes!!

I have not heard that in many years. We grew up with a homade Cribbage board. My parents were married in 1937. Dad had taken a piece of plywood, marked it with a pencil and made the holes with a nail. Pegs were broken wood match sticks (and still are). That was my parents entertainment.
When we played we better count our hand and crib correctly. If we missed some points, dad would claim them.
I still have that board and several other boards in the closet. No one in my family was ever interested in learning the game.

I bragged too soon.
He whooped me when we got back from the stands. I conceded the game. Very humilating. Right now it's pork chops off the grill and potato salad.
I'll give him another chance in a bit.
Maybe give another update.
Or not if it's bad news.

Taught my 3 kids and 6 grand kids how to play. All these years never had a 29. Ten year old grandson had one last year.

My dad taught me how to play when I was about 10. Played many games with him and lost most of them. After I retired from the military and moved close to my folks, my dad and I would play every Thanksgiving and Christmas. I believe it even on wins and losses. Have not played since he passed away.

I learned to play while in the Army and love the game. Spent many nights in the field playing and a lot of week-ends with Army buddies and their families playing. Nobody had any money so we'd kinda rotate and the ladies would fix the food and have enjoyable evenings usually playing well into the morning hours playing Cribbage and Eucure. Thanks for bringing back some good memories. Keith

And you are after people for wasting time watching historical and news shows on TV?(LOL)Also didn't you say games were for kids? But for my part more power to you if that is what you like to do.I'd rather play Hearts and Rook.

A great game learned to play a long time ago and still enjoy throwing those paste boards around. Another game that has really caught on with our family is dice.

I have played crib for years & have seen a 28 (not mine) but have never seen a 29. The wife & I play a couple games almost every night.

Sorry TF,
You can't provoke me into an argument about TV. If you want to research it you'll find how destructive the 4 1/2 hours of tv the average American watches each day really is.
You just can't tell me Wheat47's brother would have learned his arithmetic as well watching TV as he did learning to play cribbage. And you can't tell me watching tv would keep an old man's brain as sharp as playing cribbage, or Scrabble, or Hearts or reading a book does.
TV has made Americans lazy, it's made them over emotional, it's made them lose their ability to think critically and rationally.
TV has really dumbed down this country.
Those are inescapable facts.
I am NOT against people having pastimes or down time. But pick your poison carefully.
TV is the least helpful thing you can do for yourself. And the fact is the more of it you watch the dumber you become.
By the way, Mike beat me again last night. A good rousting tussle that came down to the wire. But he counted first and that decided it.

As you say...on keeping an old man's brain sharp......crossword puzzles will do it. I work them while I eat. Keep a pad of them on the dining room table. After I retired I rarely mingled and basically lost the ability for my brain to put words in my mouth. Conversations were embarassing, searching for simple words. After several years of crosswords, I'm sharp as a tack.....well maybe a dull nail. 😏
