Farmall M issues

I have a 1945 Farmall M that I have replaced plugs, wires, distributor cap/rotor, new wiring and rebuilt carb. The problem I am having is it starts fine and runs fine for about 5 min or until it gets warmed up then it falls on its face. If you catch it in time you can pull out on the choke and bring it back but from that point it runs pretty rough. Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

There should be no "extra" fuel filter, just the sediment bowl and strainer at the carb. Use a good catch pan and remove the plug from the very bottom of the
carb. Fuel will run out for 4 seconds then be a reduced flow. It should still flow a 1/8" stream or fill a pint jar in a minute or so. If not, there is
restriction in the tank outlet, the sediment bowl/valve, or the screen at the carb inlet. Jim

If your choking it to keep it running I would think it?s a fuel problem. I
just had the same problem you describe on one I?m working on. The
trouble was not enough fuel getting to the carb. In my case it was a
plugged sentiment bowl and trash in the bottom of the gas tank
blocking fuel flow. Things I would check: Run it with out the gas cap
off see if it helps, is the hole in the bottom of the gas tank covered up
or plugged with debris, is the screen in the sediment bowl plugged
up. Double check the carb. Is the needle opening properly, is the float
set right, I think the book says it should be set to 1 inch and 5/16
when open. Is the screen in the fuel line into the card clear. These
are things I have run into before hope it helps. Let us know what you
find.

Time it past for you learning trouble shooting. One should always trouble shoot then parts never the other way around.
#1 make sure you have good blue/white spark from the center wire of the distributor cap and all 4 plugs that jump a 1/4 inch gap or more
#2 pull the carb drain plug and make sure you have good steady flow of gas that will fill a pint jar in less then 3 minutes and yes catch the gas to look for water/dirt etc.
#3 when was the last time you serviced the air cleaner and dumped the mud and water out and fill with fresh oil??

5 minutes say likely to be fuel flow problem but can be other things as well. So start ti up and then when it dies do the trouble shooting as fast as you can and do spark first for safety reason so you do not catch it on fire

Thanks for ideas to hopefully remedy my issues. I will say that the 2 things mentioned about the sediment bowl and the fuel tank I had not paid attention to. Thanks again

Look into the fuel tank , on my M the hole for fuel outlet was getting covered up by dirt and one of those tin type flaps from the seal on a can of HEET or carb cleaner.

with valve closed, disconnect fuel line at carb , then open valve at sediment bowl and check the fuel flow. gas should be running out of line in a full stream with the tank over 1/4 full, fuller the tank farther the stream. that is the most important and first thing to check. lots of times the sediment bowl inlet plugs with junk. it may or may not have a filter in sediment bowl. plus there is a filter screen at carb inlet. no idea what you have going on as this is factory stuff i'm talking about. any time you have the carb off is always a good time to check fuel flow , plus your flushing the line before installing it back on carb.

Recently a SIL was working on a gas 706 Farmall. He'd finished some work on it and decided to put some gas in it before he ran it. Couldn't get it to start. He did the fuel flow test and had great flow. He called and ask me to look at it. Great spark. Distributor is a reman about 6 months old. I pulled the plug on the bottom of the carb. Right away I noticed that the gas was cloudy. Drained the gas and got gas from a different place and it started right up. SIL had gone to the closest place for gas even though he knows the place has a poor reputation.
