SC case winter oil

Jon, Seeing the grade that you are using, do you use diesel oil? I have often thought about using diesel oil in my gas engines, but so far have not.

I was thinking of 10w30 which would turn nice when cold and when the engine warms up would still give good 30 rating thoughts?

The 15w-40, or 10w-40 if in extreme cold.

Diesel oil (CJ, CK, in the circle) is better suited for the old flat tappet engines. Gas oil (S designation) is designed around roller cams and emissions, neither of them apply to the old engines.

Depends on where you live and what you plan to do with in in the winter. I'm in Missouri and use 20W-50 in most of my tractor but do not get down below zero much and when we do I am not likely to run one. So if south of me 20W-50 will work just fine but if up north maybe a 15W-40 or a 10W-40

Rotella T 15w-40, or another brand, but make sure it has the zinc additive to protect the camshaft lobes and lifters.

I like the diesel oil myself.
Extra protection does not hurt a thing.
I have engines and tractors and vehicles that range from 1912 to 2004.
15-40 works well in all of them.

Any oil available today is better than any oil available when that tractor was new, so use what you want. 10/30 is fine. I use 15/40 because I have diesels too and only want one oil around.

Rusty ... the zinc additive thing has been talked about here over and over again, I can't remember exactly any details EXCEPT for the fact that most of us
think that all Rotella oils have the zinc additive and I believe that is not the case. Some do yes, but some don't. There are a variety of Rotella
categories I believe. I might even bet a small amount of money that the Rotella from Wally World might not have any, but that's a guess and an easy bet
sitting here behind my keyboard. If a guy had an extra day, I'm sure one could fill it easily looking for info on the computer. Maybe someone here can chime
in with what they know about it.

Not needed on that kind of engine. When it was new the oil didn't have zinc (non detergent oil in the 40s and early 50s). The zinc is only needed with the high performance valve springs that put a huge amount of pressure on the flat tappet lifters. Most (all?) tractors do not have the high performance valve springs as high RPMs are rare occurrence with stock tractor engines.

There is Rotella, and there is Rotella T. Rotella T is what these older engines need, whether it is gasoline or diesel.
