My dad was a Plymouth/Desoto dealer. I have the round service sign that hung out front. He drove Desoto's as long as they were made, but we never had a fancy tow truck like that.

Those wheels are quite correct for the time on the truck. We have a few old axles on things of that age or older like 20's the wheels/hubs were that heavy or heavier. The size of the tires are probably 8.25-20's with Dayton wheels. Though I never really understood the name being Dayton versus Budds. I am going to guess the Budd because it was made by the Budd company way back when. Same for the Dayton maybe originally made in Dayton OH.

Dayton and Budd wheels are 2 different things. The truck pictured has Dayton wheels- spoke hub with a spacer ring between duals. Budd wheels are stud piloted- one piece wheels with inner and outer lug nuts for duals. Both have been mostly replaced with hub pilot wheels on newer trucks.
