Carburettor fuel pipe

After a carburettor service, I cannot get the steel fuel pipe to seal to the inlet , have used new 6mm olives , but still leaks. I could buy a new copper pipe, but I don't think this would work. should I try a banjo connector, any ideas. Mike. UK.

We can give more accurate advice if we know what brand/model/year you are having trouble with. The essence of a compression fitting is smooth collapse of the ends of the "olive" ferrule. Is it compressed uniformly on the tube? Jim

Is there any chance this is a Farmall or International product? they used a unique compression sleeve (Your 'Olive', I believe.) on their fuel lines. The standard 5/16" compression sleeve will not work. the IH part is flat on one side.

GOOD point, t.r.k., if that happens to be what he's working with.

Actually, IH used "tube nuts" with the "nut" and "ferrule" machined and sold as one piece.

When installed and tightened on the line for the first time, the ferrule gets squeezed down on the line, and breaks free of the nut.

This one is 1/2"-20 threads for 5/16" line.

IH part #222-503

Thanks to all for useful replies , I shall start with replacing steel with copper and find a assortment of olives, it seems the olive is not bedding into the pipe , run out of thred ! Mike. UK.

I replaced the steel with 6mm copper and olives , but the carb. connection still did not seal, so put two olives on and finally got a seal. Do you think the pipe should be 6.5mm ? Mike

Copper tubing is not recommended for fuel because it work hardens with vibration and gets brittle. However, if the tractor is getting little use it should outlive you.
