Is this a wives tail?

Sometimes I do things and wonder exactly what the reasoning
is. I?ve always done it that way, that?s why! Two weeks ago I
weaned calves and had several with pinkeye. We still had
some flies then.

Like I?ve always done, when I was graining them later that day
I poured a fistful of table salt in my hand and threw it in each
offending eye. Two days later everyone was cleared up.

Is there actually any science to that or is it like mom and her
axle grease remedy for any wound? It might have helped. It
might not have helped. But we did it and no one died.

I?d sure hate to have been those calves though. I wince every
time I do it but every one clears up quick. Too much salinity
for the bacteria? All the watering washes out the bacteria?
I?ve been lucky for 40 some years?

If it works keep doing it . When I get a bad sore In my mouth I put a big finger full of salt on it and yes it hurts but it also clears the sore right up quick

not sure if its scientifically proven but, I've used it that way for years. I saw dad do it and granddad did it too... Now if you really want to wince, when we would castrate hogs, dad had a mixture 3/1 of table salt and sugar that he put on the fresh cuts... that kinda gives a new meaning to salt pork..

John,
One time Dr prescribed a 5% "Saline Solution".
Dang I didn't realize salt cost so much. $35 half an 15 ml.

I would say Salt may have been a good thing. Couldn't have hurt.

(quoted from post at 22:59:16 11/06/19) I did this for years.

Probably helps as much as anything will.
pump a quart of water with a table spoon of salt thru my nose with a water pick daily to help with sinus infections. I think it helps as much as any of the prescription drugs.

I can't say about the salt. A local veterinarian here had us put a drop of at the time combiotic in the eye with the needle off the syringe each eye. Right on the eyeball. Sounds like the salt deal would be a lot easier than having to catch each of them every day to treat.

I have seen my dad do it many times and seem like it always worked. Like warbaby said Tale and tail are 2 totally different subjects....especially when you put the wife in the sentence!

I remember that salt cure for mouth sores from when I was a boy. Haven?t needed it for years but it did work.

When I was growing up and living on the Gulf Coast, any injury you got in saltwater fishing, wading, or whatever, healed itself. Only problem is that salt has a burning sensation, especially when you swim in salt water getting it in your eyes and I'd have to assume the calves weren't all that happy about getting salt in their eyes. Never had pinkeye, although growing up some kids had it. Don't know what it feels like so I can't say if the salt in their eyes was the lesser of two evils.

Salt is a natural antiseptic, that's why meat was preserved with it, it killed the mold and bacteria leaving the meat suitable to eat. The salt is doing the same thing for the cows by killing the bacteria that is causing the pinkeye. I'm sure it's painful, but has to be better than having pinkeye.

Lots of ways to treat pinkeye. My Grandpappy used to say that you can treat them and they will be better in 3 weeks. Or just leave them alone and they will be over it in 21 days.

I won't touch your wive's tail question.

Seems to me granular salt could itself do harm by scratching the cornea. Would a salt solution work just as well?

It doesn't cure anything, or kill the bacteria. I think you'll find as many cattlemen that will tell you it does nothing as you will find that says it helps.
I think the general belief is that the salt MIGHT help in that it causes the eye to water, therefor flushing it well. But most will tell you what Old Farmall Fan's gandpappy told him. It'll clear up in 3 weeks with treatment, or 21 days without.

Dont know, but I tried it on my granddaughter and my wife got all over me. So after all the yelling, next time they will have to just cure it themselves.

For many years my dad poured salt in the bag when we cut calves. It pretty much stopped any infections or problems but you could tell they didn't like it much.

My dad used a pop bottle full of diesel fuel on the pigs when we castrated them...used motor oil brushed on ringworm when the calves got it. Guess you used what ya had back then....
