Can I swap a dt466 into it?

I purchased a international s1800 grain truck yesterday for $1400. It has a 400 bushel Omaha standard bed with a rainbow roll tarp. The cab and hood are spotless besides a small hole in the fender which is fiberglass. It has an IH 404 gas v8 which is fine but it?s getting coolant into one of the cylinders. If all it needs is a head gasket I?ll leave it gas, but if it?s getting a new engine, it?s going to be diesel. My question is will a dt466 bolt up the same as a 404 v8?

Just for starter the DT466 has to be at least 12-16" longer than the V8. Are you going cut the center out of the radiator to fit it in????------------Loren

Go to a salvage yard and pull a gas engine from an old 815/915. I did that on an old truck and it worked great. That said, I know an IH v-8 gas will bolt to an M clutch housing. If an m is the same as a 466 then yes they will.

The 815 gas had a 345 I do not know what the 915 gas had. Most of the gas 815-915 combines in my area burned up.

I have done it more than once for folks that want to pay to price. I go to where they junk school buses and get the motor , cross members ect. Takes a different radiator, different air intake , throttle, exhaust , just too much for a layman to take on unless you had the complete junk truck with the 466 sitting there, not a bolt in exchange.

I would consider the difference in engine length, cooling ability and then the transmission setup. If the transmission is a 5and 4 it would work without the rear end gears needing changing as you could get the splits with the 5and 4 For short hauls like to the bin or local elevator the speed difference would not matter much.

Those engines had issues with the heads warping. Check it for flatness . before you replace the gasket. We had great luck with Felpro gasket and milled heads. Never had one cracked. Stay away from long hills with a 400 bushel load.

Forget it , like a good pickup engine, some in school buses would not go fast at all. The almost bolt in v8 ih engine back then was the dog dv550 . You sure do not want to make that swap. Just fix yours.
