Yellow cans.

Other than color yellow vs red. Is there a difference in plastic used for diesel vs gas can?

I have many red cans and yellow spray paint is cheaper than buying a yellow cans.

Same material. Paint comes off with gasoline or diesel. Some spouts might be different (usually diesel bigger to prevent wrong fuel use. an electric soldering iron can mark the can diesel. Jim

I remove spouts and use metal funnel with a fine screen. Also surprised to find things in the screen.

Good idea on the screen, mine has saved me some trouble! I have 2 yellow cans, lots of red ones, I never put diesel in the red ones, that could be expensive!

Most of the red cans have the one hand handle molded into the top.
Just wrap the hand hold with yellow vinyl electrical tape.
Clean the handle good with starting fluid first.

Cheaper than putting gas in a red can! I have one little red can I painted yellow, but it didn?t stick very well. Made it to carry on my tractor hauler, if you have to change a fuel filter, you need a gallon of fuel for priming.

Law only allows use of a certain color for a certain type of fuel. You try putting wrong fuel in can you might just get pump shut off so you can no longer pump fuel. And I think there is a fine if cought puting wrong fuel in a can.

I'll ask the boys working in Menards paint dept for
what type paintthey recommend, or use yellow zip ties, or
yellow duct tape.

I use a sharpie to write on cans I put E85 in. It
comes off with carb cleaner.

I seen people using any container they had and Never
once seen anyone shut the pump off.

You might see if your local coop has a pump with off road fuel, save you paying taxes on the fuel.
What about buying a small tank with a pump to instead of cans? I have seen them mounted on the tongue of a trailer out of the way and not taking up room in your truck, beats lifting cans!

No difference in the plastics, I fill red gas cans with hho for my tractors, I have 1 yellow diesel can and a blue kerosene can, I?ve used them all. I have 1 red 5 gallon can I only use for gasoline, which I hardly ever need, and a 2.5 gallon can for 2cycle mixed gas. I used to use a sharpie to write 50:1 on that can for the nitwits that worked with us! Lol,

I had the same decision...

Buy a yeller can and be very particular what goes in that yeller can...

Diesels are all about fuel they prefer a yeller can...

Yer gas engines are not fond of yeller make'em happy life will be good...

You do know that the screens are not for cleaning right? THere are there for flashback protection in case of a fire.

That was common in all the steel fuel funnels. Now with the new plastic funnels the screen is worthess. That brass screen was a mesh the same size as the mesh in the sediment bowel strainer. Will not even let water through.

Red can = Gasoline
Yellow can = Hi-Way Diesel
Green can = Off road Diesel, Oil, or Combustible
Blue can = Kerosene
The green one can be several,so take a choice. I finally found the pictures as to what kinds of fuel cans I have. All of these different designs are actually for different types of stuff. Also that screen in the neck is NOT a filter. It is there to qwench the flame front. Keeps things from blowing up.

That is why you park your truck between the diesel pump and the store front. That way you can fill the red cans with diesel.

Anybody ever see a blue plastic can with diesel molded in the side of it. FIL gave me one when he sold his trucks and I have never seen another one. It is old but no longer any good as a mouse chewed a hole in the side of it. He carried it in his truck full of fuel

NO !!!!! It is there to cool the flame front of possible ignition. If you hold
a lit match near an open gas can with vapors...you go BOOM. With a saftey can
and that screen the flame cannot cross over. You might get a little flash
outside the can but things will not blow up. My dad found out what can happen
with an old lawnmower tank, stale gas fumes, and a tourch. Blew the bottom
clear across the shop. Kinda gave him just a little scare!!

You mean the really old surplus GI five gallon "Blitz" cans with the goose neck filler. We had one of those and that bronze screen was at the end of the nozzle. It finally rotted out. My opinion but it really is there for flashover protection. It does act as a filter too. If you have crud in the filler can the screen will stop it and after filling you unscrew the goose neck and reverse blow it with an air hose.

I googled diesel cans and some were blue. The YT Barney's may arrest you if use any color buy yellow.
I going to Menards and look for spray paint to stick to plastic. The pump handle is green. I'm going to buy green paint, spray gas can and gas cap green.

Then I'll take a yellow sharpie and write diesel on the green cans.

When Barney gives me a ticket, I'll be sure to report him to all.

i was at my local fleet farm with one 5 gallon yellow and one 5 gallon blue can. Went to put diesel in the blue one and the lady inside shut the pump off and came out and yelled at me. She said it must be dispensed into a yellow jug, once it s paid for she didn t care what I did. I filled the yellow jug, payed and dumped it into the blue one. Filled the yellow again and paid and went home.

You're taking your life into your hands, I'ma tellin ya LOL!

I have 5 - 5 gallon cans that are prolly 30 years old, that I use for diesel. They are brown plastic, and say Penncap M on the side. Nobody ever told me I can't use them, although I have had an occasional person ask me what is in them!

Boy am I in trouble, have a red 25 gal tote I get diesel in and a 5 gal yellow can I get gas in. Never had a problem at the pump but I am in Oklahoma which is still somewhat land of the free.

Who the hell uses those "safety cans" ???
I have only ever seen them in use in an industrial plant/factory.
Hand held cans filled at the fuel pumps used by the public are 99.9% the plastic jugs.
