I got behind this big boy coming home from work. We both pulled into the gas station. Anyone know what it is?

109 self propelled howitzer. Old Vietnam era guns. Last batch I hauled were reconditioned units out of BAE York,Pa. to the port of Baltimore. Export to Pakistan.

Thats a big tank with a big peashooter -- Low level tree removal!! -- park it on the yard with the barrel pointed down the lane for a quick burglar removal tool -- incoming or leaving there toast-

Yep others nailed it. M109 self propelled 155MM artillery gun. Came out in the 60's and is still in the inventory today as the M109A7.

As far as guided munitions? Old school. The laser guided munitions "Copperhead" were in the inventory prior to Desert Storm. The US Army started deploying them in the 1980's. Kind like the laser guided smart bomb. Not new. Some were actually used in the late stages of Vietnam. But then most folks don't know that the heat seeking air to air rocket was adopted about 1959. Just a lot of stuff about weapons and munitions are classified until we are reasonably sure that countries like Russia and China have developed similar stuff or until we have to use it in combat.

Go and look up the history of the proximity fuse used on anti aircraft ammo. Developed in WWII and so secret that it was not allowed to be used where an un-exploded round could fall to the ground and be recovered by the Germans or Japanese.

No no....I'm talking about the latest stuff. Excalibur and Bonus . The systems
are getting crazy accurate.

Self propelled artillery, not as a heavily armored as a tank. They are used in shoot and scoot scenarios, they can fire, and move to a new location before the enemy and send in return fire.

They wouldn't let our soldiers use the Browning .50 cal. machine gun in Europe
during WW1 for the same reason. Didn't want one to fall in the wrong hands.
