Battery boosters

Off topic, but useful.Isee boosters rated for "peak amps, how does this compare to CCA rating of a battery?

Boosters have about 30 seconds of useful power. From a peak of power (rated at full charge) to less then 10 volts. Not comparable to CCA. Jim

My neighbor has gone through a couple of those things. They do work but are only ment to give something a swift kick in the arse for a few seconds. Cold crank amps are what your battery can deliver at like 32? and will crank several times unless the battery is going bad. Did this help you??

442,
I've never owned a battery booster or a charger with a boost large enough to start a car.

I do keep a new battery for truck on self. I have jumper cables. So, I could jump with new battery, costs about $50 from Rural King, slow charge battery or change dead battery with good battery.

I've damaged alternators in past jumping them. Alternators works too hard, it lets the smoke out, fries alternator..

A spare battery may be cheaper than a boost box.

This booster is used by a lot of the auction companies to start all the tractors. Will work even if battery is dead and shorted. 12 or 24 volts.. make to start simis and other industrial equipment.
Only negative is this bigger model is heavy as heck. 4400 peak amps. But 44.4 pounds.

To get a charger that will boost 200 amps plus its gonna cost ya $600 and up... That's not what yer average Joe would buy...

AGM, wet cell, Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid Batteries, Gel , Spiral coil battery... I have got to update my shop charger to cover the list and looking at an Associated charger... I have always used snap-on BUT I am not in it for the log haul my days are numbered...

I dunno why you asked the question if you are look'N to buy research battery types cuzz we are not living in a plan Jane wet cell world anymore...

I know boost and charge are to different words its the charge side I need to upgrade...

Hello 442,

Booster packs are rated, or advertised, with burst amp output. Realistically they may maintain 1/2 of that for 30 seconds or so.

Batteries for starting-automotive use, and are rated in CCA and can produce the stated ratings at zero degrees F. Unless you are starting a big diesel truck, a 1000 amp rated jump box is all you need. Even if it gives you 1/2 that rating, it should start most vehicles.

Mine is just that 1000 amp rating, and pretty heavy!

Guido.

Do you mean the same kind of boosters that are also referred to as "Jump Start" items. The one mentioned by sotxbill is exactly what I repaired earlier this year. I think it had been used incorrectly as one battery had its case bulged out. I put both batteries in new and also the arc-burned main switch. Now a few months later and one battery is at zero volts and the other is about 1.8 volts and they have hardly been used. Also the charging function was bad so I have had the main cables connected to a trickle/float mode charger with the main switch set on 12 V, so the charger is "feeding" both batteries in parallel, but that hasn't kept these batteries up. These new batteries came via Amazon and I wonder if they have been "selling" faulty stuff?
