arm. They don't screw around. You need to wonder about the rest of the world.

Looks pretty high tech for such an an archaic method of punishment.

From what I hear, not only is the person marked as a thief, but the culture demands a person never wipes his butt with the same hand he eats with.

That probably casts a more negative connotation over the person than being a thief!
 
Means you eat with the same hand you wipe your butt with, in olden times was a slow death sentence. You don't make love with a fork and spoon.
 
Reminds me of a supposedly true story...

Physically stealing is a horrible crime, but if you can pull off a good scam or forgery, that's an honorable accomplishment!

Remember the Americans that were arrested and held hostage in Iran,(I think Iran, one of those places), probably back in the 70's? We tried to get them out, refused to pay ransom, too dangerous to try a raid, so they sat there for quite some time.

While in there they befriended a local inmate. He knew the ropes, how things worked, and was an excellent counterfeiter. He acquired a piece of paper, some ink, a stylus, proceeded to hand draw a document that would convince the jailers that their release had been ordered by a judge.

After carving an official stamp from a shoe sole, some home made red ink, it was official, presented to the powers that be, and they were released!
 
Interesting. Always wondered how they were finally released. A friend of mine recently went over to some place near there on a trip for his company and said that the local cops can easily be paid off.
