Winter _cover_crops

We had record number of prevent plant corn fields that just sat idle this yr until late summer when it stopped raining. Then neighbor rolled out tractor /planter and planted some winter cover crops like this. We are seeing green growing fields in late October since we have not had frost yet. Usually we see brown fields after corn beans are harvested here. Are you seeing anything like this where you are. Wondering if we will see more deer and wildlife critters make it through this winter since it looks like these oats will reach maturity and produce grain in early winter and not be harvested. Also can't see any weeds in this field either.

Some of the farmers in extreme N MN raise rye grass, for lawn seed, they plant it in August and combine the next July. They plant oats with it for a cover crop and the deer love it!

Most farms around here have planted rye, or wheat as winter cover crops, but the snow geese (flying rats) are so plentiful, that they are wiping out the crop. So; many of them are letting their fields go fallow, rather than waste money on seed and labor.

The farmer across the road will always plant winter wheat following corn. After he harvest the wheat he puts in late beans. Hasn't harvested the beans yet.

I have about 30 acres that look like that. Planted oats and radishes in Aug. after rye harvest. Mine will be chopped for silage in 2-3 weeks. Might end up round baling and wrapping them as we have plenty of silage. Tom
