Controllable swing on 3pt hitch

I have a 7ft mower on a deere 2240. I can set the sway blocks
so that is does not swing much. But I?d like to find a way to
allow the mower to swing side to side, but control it. That
would enable the mower to stick out nearly 2 ft on the side.
Any ideas?

You could remove one sway block to give more lateral movement to one side, but I don't know how you could control that short of a small hydraulic cylinder attached to the tractor frame a 3 pt hitch arm. Check your manual.

I've currently got the sway blocks in the position that allows for some swing. The problem is that the mower swings as it wants. I'd like to be able to swing it as I'd like. Thinking about some sort of pulley and cable system from a small 12v winch, or some linkage with a small hydraulic cylinder.

Thought that perhaps someone here might have already done something.

Guessing the mower deck is 3 point mounted with 4 swivel wheels on it.

I know if the swivel for a wheel gets seized up it will pull the deck hard in the direction that wheel is pointing.

Maybe rig up a clamp or pin that could hold a couple of wheels in the direction you want the mower to swing to.

First off, you need to source a hyd cylinder of proper size and one with swivel ball ends. Surplus Center would be a good source. Then slide your drawar to one side and make an anchor bracket that easily bolts to the drawbar and cylinder and then make another bracket that clamps to one of your hitch arms. Be aware that the cylinder has to clear your PTO with all positions of the hitch arms, and the arms will move sideways as they are raised and lowered. If you don't have a double acting remote service valve on your tractor a 12V gear motor could be substituted. ------Loren

I would look at mounting a hydraulic cylinder on the outside of the lift arm. From the lift arm to the axle housing like a stabilizer bar would be attached. The cylinder should still have the ball ends like Loren said and you would completely remove the sway blocks. With a double acting cylinder you should be able to swing the mower to either side. Good point. Simpler design also. He would need a good strength pin thru the 3pt pin of mower so it didn't shear and unhook the mower on that side.

Just another thought; It would likely work better on the LH arm so it pushed the mower over rather than pulling it over to the RH side of tractor.

Agree the left would be best at least for me. I prefer to look over my right shoulder and that would put the least stress on the hitch. The better pins are a good suggestion too. Tony
