Ford 800 clutch not moving tractor.

I have bought an 800 with live PTO. It
appears to be in rather good condition for
its age except it can't propel its self.
When you release the clutch the tractor
moves maybe 2 inches and stops. If you use
the loader to help it move a little it then
will start moving on its own, but slowly.
My diagnosis is the clutch is shot and will
need replaced.
I have tons of experiences in clutch
rebuilding on trucks and cars, but never a
tractor. My first question is before I
assume that I now anything, is there any
way that something is stuck or out of
adjustment? Before I start splitting this
gal into two I want to make sure I am on
the correct track.
So, if you know this tractor and know about
it's clutch I sure could use some advice.
Thanks loads in advance, Bruce

Did you check the freeplay at the clutch pedal? Should have an l inch minimum of free travel.

well now I feel stupid and happy.I boasted that I have lots of clutch rebuild experience on automobiles and I did not check the clutch linkage adjustment, so now I feel stupid. The tractor now works great and that makes me feel quite happy.
Thanks for telling me to check the clutch peddle. I feel dumb for not thinking of that myself but that's ok because the tractor runs good now. I think the guy I bought it from has tried to adjust it and did not know what he was doing. I was wondering how a clutch could get so lose that there was no action whatsoever. Most folks quit burning up a clutch before it wont move at all while on flat ground.
the peddle had some free play but the lever on the case of the clutch housing has an adjustment bolt that limits release travel. I had to back it out several turns before a little play could be detected. Then I found that this tractor has a very strong clutch and I won't be needing to replace it.

The 800 could have either a one or two stage clutch. Its been a long time since I've worked on one of those, but I think you've only found half the adjustment. The linkage itself should be adjustable. The procedure is covered in the owner's manual, and probably in the I-T repair manual as well.
There is also a Ford-specific forum a little further down the page.
