It?s a rainy cold day here in Central New York so I thought I would put up a question I don?t recall seeing here before . What does everyone here use for lawn mowing chores- and also any one with collectible/ restored law/garden tractors feel free to join in. I run 2 John Deere?s a GT262 and an X320 both with 54? wide decks.

use my checkbook......other men have to eat, too. :)

2 Cub Cadet Commercial Zero Turns, and 1 John Deere L110. Ive spent more fixing the L110 than I paid for it, but the deck wasnt cheap. 1st CC Commercial I bought in 06, 2nd 2013. I did have to put a deck in the first one, but only because I messed up and hit a rebar property line marker, and a couple of little things here and there, mostly oil changes. The 2nd one hasnt been touched except a battery and oil and filter changes. The L110 hasnt been used much this year, I might end up selling it.

I/we use a relatively new Poulan 14 h.p. now, but I used a Ford LGT145 until it started using oil and smoking so much I couldn't stand running it. Still have it, either Luke or I will rebuild the engine at some point. Picked up a Ford LGT125 a couple weeks ago... runs good, but doesn't charge...another winter project. Also have a LGT165 and an older LGT145 (open sides) as projects... that I probably ought to sell.

I have a small lawn so I use an old push mower that I picked up for free. It is a Wal-Mart special. I got it from a person that paved there place so they did not have to cut grass any more. Whats that old saying about paving paradise and putting up a parking lot

JD X330 for the yard and a '57 MF 50 with an old Servis 5' shredder (rotary mower to non-Texans) for the back 40 (2 acres).

Murray self propelled. Was new in 2005 or so. I got it free because the original owner lost the right front wheel when a snap ring came loose. He threw the wheel in the trash and set the lawn mower in the give away pile. No grass was under the deck, never used! New drive wheel and snap ring 27.50 Jim

cvphoto39157.jpg

If I can?t get it with the cub I use a weed eater.

Been using a 20+ year old White LT 125 that was my dad's. I got tired of blowing up tires and adding oil each time I needed it so last year I treated myself to a new Husqvarna. 48" cut and 24 HP Kohler.

Toro zero turn, 50" deck and 21hp Kawasaki engine.
Poulan garden tractor, 54" deck and 24hp B&S engine.
Huskee garden tractor, 42" deck and 18.5hp B&S engine.

The Huskee is also the workhorse for pulling any one of several sprayers, 25 gallon to 60 gallon. It's wired with an on/off switch to run the pumps on the sprayers. With a gear shift transmission, it's easier to maintain a constant speed for spraying than with the hydro on the Poulan

I too believe in the free mower being real good. LOL. Shoot the one I have sits out side 24/7-365 and run well when I need it. It even was under water in one of the floods I had and all I did was drain and fill the oil and did the same with the gas tank and it fired right up

a 1987 F-935 John Deere with a 60 inch deck. 23 HP yanmar diesel. It was one year old when I bought it. Still kicks grass.

A three year old Husky 21 inch and the War Dept, she needs the excersize . , but she is starting to ware out and maintenance cost are starting to run high on her . May switch over and go environmentally friendly and start bring in my buddy's sheep a couple times a month that way the lawn can get mowed and fertilized all in one operation .

Am I the only one who has a Grasshopper? In the barn I have a B Farmall with a Woods belly mower. Dad put several thousand hours on it when he was active. All it has needed for repairs during that time is a starter and voltage regulator. The Farmall will still start up and do a day s work but the Grasshopper is handier. My son has a Gravely.

I use a 1987 Grasshopper with a 60"deck. Love it. I repowered the unit with a 20 HP Subaru, instead of the original B&S. It is a great mowing
machine. I mow about 3 acres weekly. I also have a 48 inch rotary broom for it that works well for sweeping up all the black walnuts every
fall.Grasshopper is a tough machine in my opinion.

Fun post! We have a 2013 Simplicity Broadmoor with a 22HP B&G engine and a 44" cutting deck, great little tractor/mower. Wife mows a lot 'cause I'm working and she handles it like nobody's business, which works well for me :)

20 year old Simplicity Landlord with a 54 inch deck. Trim with a 1987 commercial lawnboy 21 inch. Ideal for my 2.5 acres.

1948 Farmall Cub with a Woods belly mower. Where that doesn't fit (like between the rows in the orchard), a 1995 Sears garden tractor. Where that doesn't fit, an even smaller 1985 Sears lawn tractor.

John Deere Lx188 48" deck bought new in 96. Replaced hood carb deck bearings and seat. Used to mow five acres a week now only 2.5.

2013 Massey 1635 with ArtsWay 72" 3PT mower for large areas and the pasture. And just purchased a 2019 Big Dog zero turn with a 56" deck for around the buildings and house. My first zero turn which replaces an old and worn out Poulan 48" lawn tractor. So far I have 5 hours on it and like it. 22 HP Kawasaki. It is sure quick and I'm sort of getting the hang of it - but I've hit the house a few times, ran into the truck once, scratched the side of the new mower on the fender of the flatbed trailer, and backed over the wife's favorite peony bush. Other than that its awesome!

2001 Troy-Bilt w/46" deck and 22 hp Intek B &S, over 900 hours, I bought it new. Haven't had to replace a spindle yet.
2002 Troy-Bilt w/46" deck and 20 hp Intek B & S, 400 hours, paid $100, had to replace sheet metal front axle with a cast iron one, and had to replace the transaxle cause it was bent. I think the PO dropped it. Needs a new seat.
6 or 7 Lawn-Boy walk behinds, a 20" Bolens mulching mower.(free, had to change oil, spark plug, buy a new blade and air cleaner, runs great. Gonna be for sale soon. Plus 2 other walk behinds that need work, haven't got to them yet. 1st pic is my favorite trim mower, a Lawn-Boy commercial. 2nd pic, a rare "Promo" Lawn-Boy, 1 year only model. 3rd pic A 4 stroke aluminum deck Lawn-Boy I have for sale, runs great!. I LOVE the 2 stroke motors on the Lawn-Boys! They run at a little higher rpm and do a better job mowing...

Like most of the stuff on my farm, the lawn mower is over 30 years old. A Jd 111 Lawn tractor. I think about a 36 inch. Its a big yard and in a wet year it sees a lot of hours. Rebuilt the Peerless transaxle and replaced the axles once already. Carburetor shafts are pretty floppy but it starts and runs fine. Briggs 11hp. This mower was bought used by my dad back in the 1990s. Its on my youtube channel several times but I won't bore anybody with the link.

60 inch Ferris, and a 23 inch walk behind that I use once or twice a year for some close places, and a '68 Ford 100 that I am hoping to fix up and paint soon.

A 30+ year old JD self propelled push mower with a 5 HP Kawasaki engine.

It is a freebee rescue. Used to have a blade clutch that burned out. Took it off, replaced it with a direct drive hub.

The aluminum deck has been welded and plated back together a few times, but will still start first pull nearly every time.

Never bought a new mower in my adult life! All were free or super cheap well used.

I now with a Great Dane 61" zero turn. It replaced a H212 Allis Chalmers that I never could keep a belt on.
The Allis has been put under the shed until I can get the time, and funds, to get some implements for it and start using it for a garden.

1994 John Deere LX178 with 15 horse water cooled Kawasaki V-twin.

Up until last year, all I ever spend on it was the Three B's - Belts, Blades and Batteries.

Started running funny last year, replaced the fuel pump which helped a little, but didn't cure it. Had the carb off 3-4 times cleaning it and that helped temporarily. Thought I had it fixed but it came back this Spring.

I was getting tired of messing with it and Mawteen said "Jeeze, it's 25 years old, go get a new one already!" Intended to, until I looked at what $4000 gets you for a mower, compared to what I had. Suddenly, $150 or so for a new carburetor seemed like a deal!

Every Fall, I pull the deck off it, scrape and wirebrush the underside to clean metal, hit it with Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer, touch up the paint if needed on the outside, lube everything, sharpen the blades, change the oil and filter and check the antifreeze. Pop the battery back in it in the Spring and its ready for another season.

Main mower last 18 years is JD1145 4x4 has 72" Lastek deck/ sweeper/ aerator/ 54" blower/ blade and Deere 60" and 72" decks, 2800 hours. added a 2nd on about 4 years ago with a cab (but very rusty)(3200 hours)Mowing for 1 neighbor and moving snow for 4 neighbors has paid for them mutiple times over. Started moving snow for the neighbors 25 years ago with a single cylinder 12 hp craftsman rider and single stage snow blower/ drifts were 4-6 feet deep.... have also had allis chalmers 920 and JD 400 before 1145's

1978 Power King 2418 and a 1964 cub LoBoy with a woods 5 ft. deck. Trim and do the ditches with a Honda push mower somebody threw away (the horrible "engine knock" was a loose blade) and a cub cadet 4 stroke weed wacker.

Steiner 420 diesel with 5 foot deck and 4 foot snow blower, and Steiner 430 diesel that gets switched between a post hole digger, boom mower tiller and loader

I use a Kubota G2000S with liquid cooled kubota gas engine and 54 inch deck and a John Deere 332 diesel with 50 inch mower deck.

Couple exmark lazer z 60s
cvphoto39185.png

cvphoto39186.png

This one has over 4700 hrs on it.
I also have a 1968 John Deere 112 lawn tractor and a sears 16, subarban garden tractor, I just have them I don?t mow with them though, just some neat old iron!

Two 3680 deisel front deck KUBOTAS with 72 in decks and a flex wing rino finish mower that cuts 12 ft at a pass.

I use a JD 275 for trimming. Farmall C for the mowing .

At my other place I use a husky varrana
cvphoto39187.jpg

And the Jubilee.

I have several machines from Gravely to Cub Cadet, several Husqvarnas, snapper rider, and a couple other odds and ends. Love the Husqvarna machines and have a 46" and a 54". This 56 is an ESTATE machine. Big bad beauty.

I use a 73 Wheelhorse 12 automatic that's been here since new in 1973.I think it's on it's fourth or fifth deck shell.Original engine and trans have never been apart.Has been through 3 carbs, all from the throttle shaft wearing the body out.I also have a C-160 that is a beauty. That ad came up on Craigslist about 15 years ago when I sat down for a sandwich.Free, come haul off today.I called him,I was the first, said I would leave right now,I just didn't want to take a ride if he wouldn't wait on me.He waited and I dragged it on with a come along. He had no clue what was wrong with it,if anything,it came with the house.Nothing happened when he turned the key,and besides that it had a clutch pedal. It was just scrap to him.It is faded, but was never left in the weather.I just picked up a 1973 14 automatic, almost a twin to my other 73,looks absolutely horrid, but runs and works perfect. It had sat in a chicken pen,and the calcium in the rear wheels had rotted them in half.

Wife uses a Snapper rider ( like Forest Gump), and a Kobota BX22?? 3 point finish mower, with a loader (nice handy tractor). I run a 6 ft. finish mower either behind a 9-N or a Jubilee. also have 2 cub cadetts that haven't been used for mowing for several years. For the trimming have a walk behind string trimmer on big wheels. joe

Just used three of mine today, mowed lawn for last time??? today with a 1988 wheel Horse 518, swept the grass up a 1970 JD 110. Shoved the remaining squash and vines up to the brush pile with a 1988 Wheel Horse 520. Tomorrow I might use the 68 W.H. Raider with 3 foot tiller on a fall pass over the garden and I have a 66 Wheel Horse lawn ranger Just because.

Ran into what you are saying about your Allis. My 46 inch Husqvarna had the original mandrels, pulleys, and belt since I bought it used. It is an AYP machine and well built. Replaced all of the parts this summer and put a new after market belt on it and the machine promptly started chewing on it. Went to an OEM FACTORY belt. Now here is the kicker. With the deck in the mow position and the machine running ,engage the deck and then turn the key off. You want to see where the belts are tracking especially on the idler pulleys. If you look at the photo you can see the black flat pulley is not in line. The bracket on the deck had been rewelded and was not aligned correctly.I took my grinder and beveled the spacer hub just a little and now the pulley and belt track almost perfectly in the center of the hubs. Nothing gets warm and the belt is happy as a clam. The belt tracking is pretty critical. Also the inside surfaces of the pulleys check for ANY rust or crap or bent sides. That will really rip belts apart. Use a file or a little sand paper to clean them. They should be shining.

John deere zero turn for the yards and kubota for the ruff areas. Bought the 345 so my kids can mow,

25 year old Deutz/Allis 1616. Just sold a Allis Chalmers 920 Diesel I had used since 1996 but it was needing some work. Since we didn't really need a "garden tractor" anymore and engine parts are so hard to find, we decided to just replace it with a lawn mower.
Hope to get something a little newer soon but don't like the foot operated hydros, prefer the lever.

John Deere 4700 HST utility tractor with a Landpride 7 foot finish mower operated by my retired 76 year old cousin. I have a 4 acre yard .

I'm using my Country Clipper with 1300+ hours on it. I have been using it for 8 years and love it. It has a 60 inch deck and is a ZTR that you operate with one joy stick. It has a flip up deck on it and is very easy to do any maintenance on. Very little to no mechanical problems so far.

Bought a Toro zero turn with the my ride suspension platform, have an issue with my back that is why bought the Toro and absolutely love the ride. Underside of the deck is shiny clean even with the wet summer we had. Been good for two years now but don't expect it will last like the 20 yr old Dixon that is just starting to lose a little compression the last year or so.

Old John Deere ,the economy model that still says JD. I think it?s a LA 145? It?s done a fair bit of work and been a great mower.

I have a 2009 Cub Cadet GT2542 42" deck. Kohler Command 20 hp. V Twin horizontal shaft. 800+ hrs.

Vern

A Massey GC2300 sub-compact with a 60" deck does most of the mowing around our place. My son is old enough now to help and likes using the 2418 Power King or the 1200 Cub Cadet. We have around 4 acres of grass so mowing is a common task during the summer, especially as wet as it was this year.

Ferris IS700Z zero turn radius mower with 52" deck. Our Craftsman lawn tractor is now used so infrequently that I have to keep it on a battery maintainer. And I used to mow the rough stuff with a Mott F6 on my Ford 4000, but the ZTR can mow it about as fast, so it's not worth the bother to hitch up the flail mower.

John Deere M665 zero turn with 60" deck does most of it. Minneapolis Moline 110 with 42" deck inside the fenced dog yard. Minneapolis Moline 112 hydro with 42" snowblower for clearing driveway in the winter.

How do you raise your deck on that CC? There is a dealer 25 miles from here.

My latest purchase is a 2016 Ferris IZ700S with 61 inch deck, modified to suit me, and I like to use it on groomed pasture perimeters and access lanes, and large areas for it's size and comfort. Love it but in the spring wet grass is a PIA to clean out. I have a Hustler Fastrak 44 ZT that I use for around the house (with the same problem as with the other mowers) and noticed that Hustler has out a new electric lift 54" deck. Thinking about purchasing a next years model, giving them a year to fix any bugs.

Is the CC a manual lift? If so, do you just brute force it or have some kind of lifting aide?
