smoke problem 1940 IH

Black or gray smoke?? What oil did you use as in say a 30W oil or say a 20W-50 or say a 10W30??. Smoke can be many things and cause but a number of problems.

Black smoke running to rich.
Gray oil burning.
A white sort of smoke that smell like antifreeze is a head gasket of cracked head.

Lack of into makes it hard for use to help you help your self.
Or did you by chance over fill it with oil which will also cause it to smoke

check the compression and go from there.no info if its an old engine or what???give some info.

I think that holds 6 quarts, any chance it was overfilled?

Under what condition does it smoke? Bad oil rings tend to smoke worse under load. Bad valve guides smoke worse on start up.

Is the crankcase vent clean?

Under severe engine sludging, the drain back from the valve cover can get clogged causing oil to fill the valve cover. Rare, but plausible.

Blue smoke is burning oil.do what rwb said.could have stuck rings, worn rings,or worn valve guides. I have seen cars with drain doles in top of head clogged with sludge. The sludge was caused by running cold(thermostat), and inoperative pcv system(crankcase breather in your case). I have installed umbrella type valve seals on intakes to help. May need overhaul.

More than once I have come across an engine that started smoking rather suddenly, only to discover after much testing that someone had accidently added diesel to the gas tank.

Open the top petcock towards the front right side of the oil pan and let the oil drain down to that level. Then run the tractor again.

I don?t like straight 30. The 806 gas smoked a little with the 30 weight. Switched to 10w40. No smoke , no oil usage. Try 10w40 or like 0ld said , 20w50. Good luck.

Just for fun, check that the crankcase vent hasn't been blocked by dirt dauber nests. That's a problem in this area and I actually had one that smoked a little and the problem turned out to be a blocked crankcase vent.

By any chance has this tractor been sitting for a length of time, and you recently got it running again?

Odds are good in that situation that you've got some stuck rings. I've had luck in this situation with getting the engine up to temperature, then spraying a can of Seafoam into the intake as fast as the engine will take it without stalling. Shut down, let it sit overnight. Start up the next morning, and it will smoke (gray) like a freight train for a while, then clear up.

Any other option is expensive, head work, sleeves and pistons...
