Im at a LOSS ; My 44' Farmall starts slow; new 6V battery, rebuilt starter, new cables. Starts slow but turns over enough to start- what am I missing? Thanks.

My son's 46 H had a problem similar to yours. The solution was to rewire getting rid of all old original wiring and a few newer wires. The primary problem seemed to be too small a wire feeding the ignition system, robbing the coil and points of adequate voltage during cranking. Hope this can be a help to you.......gobble

Are the new cables size 1/0 or 2/0 or did you go to parts store and say I need a cable so many inches long and you were sold a cable made for 12 volt auto system that's maybe size 2 or 4 which is not heavy enough for 6 volt use. I've seen this before and that's my reason for asking.

Is the ground cable connected to clean metal, near the starter or on it? Is the engine pretty stock or has it been souped up with high comprsion pistons or something else that would make it turn over hard? How does it turn over with a crank? I know a C is a samaller engine, but ours spins over just fine with 6 volt battery, and it has a small 12 volt cable on it. Also starts nicely with the crank.

Many have found a set of 2ot cables will do the trick. Same as welding cables. These are fine stran and very flexable. Go to a junkyard and find an older Ford or Lincoln that had the battery in the trunk. Take your time and you should be able to pull out about a 12 foot long piece. It will be this big.

Look for this in the trunk.

New battery cable as in off the shelve from a parts store or ones you made up?? Ones you find at an auto parts store are 2 or 4 gauge and will not cut it on 6 volts. You need to make up your own set from 0 or 00 cables. Figure they have to be almost as big as your thumb no less or slow or no start

Did it start slow before you put the new parts on? Short heavy gauge cables will help but 6 V systems were never super fast. If you're thinking of the speed of a 12 volt starter, the 6 V will never be that fast.

Might be the generator or the voltage regulator. A fully charged 6 volt battery should test at around 7 volts.

I have seen that caused when the battery ground cable is attached to say thin or wimpy or rusty sheet metal. Try to attach the ground cable direct to a starter mount bolt or on or as near as possible to the starter NOT sheet metal.

To be safe I would remove, clean n wire brush bright n shiny each and every battery and ground and starter or switch/solenoid cable connection,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I would use no less then 1 gauge, better 0 or 00 cables,,,,,,,,,,I would use the biggest heaviest highest CCA rated battery possible,,,,,,,,Insure the starter switch or solenoid is good quality with low resistance and low voltage drop, if its bad/resistive you drop too much voltage across it leaving less for the starter CHECK SWITCH OR SOLENOID that may be the problem !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Of course the starter motor itself may be the problem in which case even if all else above is good she cranks slowwwwwwwwwwwwww.

all wiring is new and correct size.... I will be gone today but will check all these tips latter! Thanks guys!

One of my H's acted like that for a long time.

I replaced the ground cable with one of the braided steel cables and it made a huge difference.

Or he could go to local welding supply store and by new welding cable and solder appropriate ends onto it. No brush to crawl thru, no wasps to sting and no snakes to bit him.

But it is not red. I got three cables. This shorter one and two 16 footers for a little over 10 bucks. Also weld cable is rubberized and this stuff is that really heavy vinyl stuff. What ever floats you Canoe.

Sounds exactly like my M was, new everything. switched to group 2 6v. Cranks alot faster. So if you still have group 1 i would say definitely worth trying.

Thanks for all this guys; all cables are new and appropriate size; even tho the local shop rebuilt my starter I think I will try a new one off this site. Thanks again!

Explain this to me? I go to TS or Orscheln and buy a new 6V battery; they usually only have one....one to choose from!

Very simple 6 volt batteries and such are a thing of the past so not many to chose from.

There are never any at our local Orscheln's. Just an empty spot on the shelf. I have an H that needs a battery. I'm thinking of just changing it out to a 12 volt system, or maybe just selling the H. Don't need it anymore.

Simple fact 6 volt batteries are a thing of the past as in due to cost etc. and how many are wanted now days few are out there to be had so hard to find them if you even can find them with out having to special order them

You may have gotten a weak battery. I put a new 6v from TSC in my Farmall A and it cranks strongly. I nursed my previous battery for a long time (it would crank weakly and if it didn t start quickly I would have to recharge it). I had forgotten how well the Farmall starts until I put this new battery in.
