Later start fo schools

Hi, I see on the news that in California they want to make later start for schools. They say kids need more sleep. I think parents should take the phone and Internet capabilities away at 8:00 pm.
As kids, on our farm we were up at 4:30am, feed cattle, start milking around 5:00 am. Later clean up, breakfast
Then catch school bus at 7:45 am, classes start at 9:00
No one had to tell us to go to bed. Ed Will

The same thing is happening here in parts of Maryland. They won't think of telling the kids to go to bed earlier because that would interfere with their late night "social" activities.

Crazy and worst part is the rest of the country will follow along. No reason for California to influence my life style here in Tennessee , but some folks sure think if California does it it must be right. Just make the dang kids go to bed earlier.

If kids are tired in school it is because the parents aren't making them go to bed early enough. They will just stay up later if school starts later and nothing is done by the parents to increase sleep time. And because it is being done in California that might be a good reason NOT to do it anywhere else. With the debt and other problems they have I don't see them as being a good example for the rest of the country.

As a parent with kids in school, if they are into sports of any kind, by the time they get home, you get them fed, and the homework is finished, it is already past bedtime many nights.

In my opinion it shouldn?t start any later than normal morning start times at regular hour jobs. Our instructor at trade school was telling the group the other day that in the real world ,we?re not all winners ,we?re not all going to get a trophy and if we?re lazy and unreliable we?re going to get fired and there?s nothing our mommies and daddies can do about it. None of this were all special everyone gets a trophy and there?s no winners and loosest. He said the way HR is handling millennials is they take the ones into a meeting that aren?t pulling their weight and ask them,?do you like working here? Do you want to continue working here? What do we need to do to make it that we can keep employing you here?? No bs or sugar coating.

What makes you think California has debt? I just googled it and they have a budget surplus! Sheesh!!! They pay enough extra taxes to support some of the poor states where the people live that dislike them so much! I think it's jealousy!

Bob Dylan had it right when in 1964 he said, "The Times They Are A'Changing" ...... and we YT'ers are stuck in a time warp in many ways. For all the guys that criticize today's kids and parents and those that live in California and those that don't live in the country or didn't grow up on a farm and do chores, keep in mind that your grandfather said the same kinds of things about your dad's generation. Lazy, useless, no-good louts with no ambition that won't ever amount to anything. Then our dads had the same views of our generation. Seems that we have all proved them wrong. Really, who cares what time they start school.

Well said. I recall the old local fellow that stood up in church and stated that he was not going to go to church on daylight savings time he was going to "stay on god's time".

Lets see.....
We want daylight savings time year round so we do not have to change our clocks and so it will get dark later in the evening.
But we want the kids to go to bed early so they can get up early for school.
Some of you guys need to make up your mind.

So now the kids will be left home alone when the parent(s) have to go to work.

Can they be trusted to get up and go?

Or end up in trouble, parent fined for truancy or worse.

Or will they have to go to daycare, which will cost more than the single parent makes in a day?

Another well thought out plan!

I don't live in California,I don't have school age kids so its not my problem.I don't care what time the clock says it is these days.I don't worry about things beyond my control.Life is good.

That sounds pretty bad until you dig into the facts and learn that relative to population North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois, Kentucky and Mississippi are far worse off.

Yes, it's relatively good! I googled CA economy, and confirmed this,

California now has the world's 5th largest economy. California's economy has surpassed that of the United Kingdom to become the world's fifth largest, according to new federal data made public Friday. California's gross domestic product rose by $127 billion from 2016 to 2017, surpassing $2.7 trillion, the data said.

Sounds like school yard stuff "What Johnny did was worse than what I did". Fact is as you point out there is a huge unfunded pension liability problem all over the USA with many states and with a lot of cities and counties.

Big economy doesn't mean sound economy and with the people with money bailing out of CA to states with low/no income tax like Texas and Florida what's left are those wanting a handout
from the state.Look at the number of people living on the street there.San Francisco's streets have become like some 3rd World place.

(quoted from post at 21:14:45 10/14/19) Bob Dylan had it right when in 1964 he said, "The Times They Are A'Changing" ...... and we YT'ers are stuck in a time warp in many ways. Very well said. Every generation in history has said and done the same and will continue to in the future.

If you think sports activities keep a kid up late, have a child
be involved with high school theater. Way more hours of practice !

Entirely different subject and completely irrelevant.

Surely, you are not claiming that CA has no debt; or are you?

I like it. This has already happened in my town. Some days I take my grand kids to school. Both parents work for the San Diego Fire Dept, and don't have days off. Last year they had to be at school a little after 7:00 Now it's 8:00. Now I can have my second cup of coffee, before rushing out of the house into the cold morning. Stan

I have a great idea. Let the mother stay home and raise the children while the father works. It worked fine up until about 1970 when families started trying to keep up with the Jones.

Don't worry. I'm standing behind a large tree. Go ahead.

When I was in school all classes first thru twelth grade, no kindergarden started at 9 anded at 3 for grades 1-8 and about 3:30 for grades 9-12. No standing out at road in dark wating for a bus that is dangerous and all got home before dark as well. Having the busses out in the dark is plain stupid. If you cannot get the kids picked up without running the rout to get it done for making the kids ride bus for 2 hours is rediculas. If you have that that the kids have to get on an hour before sunrise then it is time to stop using those oversize busses and get easier handling ones properly sized and hire more drivers. Soime kids might not be able to go that long without having to use a restroom. The ones that set the verly hours do not have to go to work in the dark and stand out along thr road for an hour wating on a bus that just might not be on time in 32* weather with 25mph winds. They don't care about the students health, only their playtime at end of day. I road a 49 passenger bus for 2 hours a day, with there 80 passenger busses they now think they have to have how long are the kids on the bus? 3 hours per trip? One day off for thanksgiving, Christmas vacation started at 2:00 of the 24th of December and back after new years on Jan second. Did not start untill after labor day and finnished with no problems in May.

MB ..... probably cut the family income in half, not a problem for most families .... you're kidding right? I don't think you can pin it all on the Jones family next door. This is 2019 and the family economics are a bit different than what they were. If you're married and your wife stays home with the kids then you're a lucky guy. But what does the mom being home or not have to do with what time school starts? I don't get the connection.

Steve,
Neighbor kid is in first grade. He gets dropped off a little after 3 pm.

The bus driver honked the horn 2x. No parent came outside to get their kid. Bus driver didn't drop the kid off. Instead it drove off and called mom.
Not sure where the parents had to pick up the kid. Just know it wasn't where the kid lives.

Did my generation do it right....?????...HHmm.....??
