Did my good deed

There are two older sisters living not too far from me. Both husbands have died. They have a small weed patch. I mowed it, and didn't charge them. Last time I did it, I got some cookies. Wonder if they will come through again. Stan

One of my wife's single girl friends used to bake me an apple pie whenever I'd do her a favor. And she hates to cook.

Years ago we had a couple rental houses on a farm that we rent. For a while they were rented by single moms. I always pushed their snow in winter, did a few plumbing jobs, fixed a water heater or dryer, replaced a fuse or two, one time even got a snake out of the kitchen. My wife used to say, "One of your girlfriends called and needs ..." All these years later we still call them my girlfriends when we see them. One of them works at our local pizza place and when we are there she will sit with us a bit to tell us about her son (now grown) and grandkids. Kindness done for kindness sake is its own reward. And cookies are accepted.

The sisters . There was three a few years ago had a snake in their patio. I went over with a shovel, and picked up a rattle snake coiled up in one corner. Stan

Chief,
I could not have done that. I would have had to take the 12guage to the snake first. Snakes just give me the willies. I do remember several years ago we had a severe snow storm in Michigan and I took the 4850 with a 840 loader out of the barn and cleaned out nearly the whole subdivision where we lived at the time. One guy came out and gave me a twenty dollar bill, one young lady gave me a box of candy and this elderly lady came out and said that she was going to remember me in her prayers. To this day I have been Blessed. That lady's prayers have been priceless. God love her. Tom

Helping others is often the best feeling one can get when working. I always try and clear the snow form older neighbors lanes and such. My sons are doing most of that now.

Funny story of two spinster sisters. My Grand father first rented their farm from their Father in 1947. Over the years the family kept dying off and the two sisters ended up with the farm. Both retired school teachers. I took over renting their farm in 1978. Now the one bad thing about their farm is it sets down in a valley just at a mile off the road. Several places have high ditch banks on both sides of the road. When the wind and snow blows in the right direction the lane gets 10 foot drifts for long stretches. In 1986 we had a snow storm that filled that drive. The sisters where fine for the first 4-5 days. Then they started to run low on some things. I had been checking on them an finally got them dug out with it taking a full day on a tractor and loader. I did not own a snow blower then. Lets just say I really cold when I got back to their house. I refused any payment from them for clearing the lane. They gave me a dozen of home bakes cookies. They then insisted I take the Thermos of coffee that had made for me. I could not refuse them that. I even drank some of it to warm up. The funny is I hate coffee. For the rest of the time they lived there they would make me home baked goods and make me coffee. I would just smile and eat a cookie/cake while forcing down that darn coffee. LOL That is the majority of the coffee I have drank in my entire life. My oldest son rents that farm yet today from their nieces. They also bake him cookies and give him coffee. He at least drinks it anyway.

When I first moved to Abilene, thirty four years or so ago I was renting a little house and my neighbors were an elderly lady and her mother. I had a Snapper mower with a 30 inch deck and it was easier to mow both yards instead of just mine. Got several thank yous. But it was just easier and I never told them that.

I like to help people. A lot of people are not able to do the work or don't have the equipment. It just makes me feel good and all I need is a thank you. Won't take money just Thank you.

We have a neighbor that clears the snow from our driveway. He just stops by as he is going to his other place. We never asked him to do it, he just does it. Wife pays him by giving him a loaf or two of homemade bread around Christmas.

Another good way to do good deeds is to join a service organization. Many of them are not getting the numbers joining that they used to.

After a dozen years of helping the elderly neighbor lady with odd jobs, tree trimming, car advice, plumbing etc etc she insisted her brother would sell her house to me after she passed. Well she did and he said " I never heard of you" and sold the house to some undesirables...... I rented mine and moved. Lesson learned.

Young couple move in beside my wife and I and I plow the snow off their driveway last year, couple days later the young girl told my wife that she left some cookies on the back patio wife ask me if I got them I told her that I have not seen them put I seen a empty plate. Damn dog.
