Piston or gear?

The pump on my 3000 is toast. I can get either a piston or gear type to replace it. What would be the best choice? I want a long lasting pump so I don't mind going with the more expensive option if it is a lot better. Tractor will be doing mowing, tilling, and wood hauling duty with some discing.

Thanks

I would go back with exactly what's on it now.

If any chance it shed metal when it failed the system will need to be cleaned out.

The suction strainer, tank should be cleaned and filter (if equipped) replaced.

Gear pumps are fixed displacement so the output flow is proportional only to rotational speed. This style of pump is used for open-center systems where unneeded flow simply goes back to the reservoir. Piston pumps are generally variable displacement where the flow can be varied to provide only what is required at any given time. This closed-center system uses a pressure compensator, possibly paired with a load-sense valve, to control the displacement. The two styles of systems use different types of valves and circuitry so whatever your tractor has now is what you need to stay with. Both gear and piston pumps are available in good, long-life versions from brand-name manufacturers. With gear pumps cast iron typically provides better life and performance compared to aluminum but good aluminum pumps are available too.

3000 should be an engine mounted piston pump. Those can be repaired. If it?s just losing prime the shaft seal can be replaced.

Piston pump was used on all the smaller Fords from about 1955 through 1975.
In 76 the 2600, 3600s which are nearly identical to a 3000 came with a gear pump.
Piston pump = about 4.4 gpm.
Gear pump = about 8.8 gpm.
The 3600 hyd system was designed to handle the higher flow rate. Your 3000 was not.
I have asked before about what might happen if you doubled the flow in your 3000 system.
Never really got a good answer.
If someone knows I would appreciate an answer.
Meanwhile, I would use the correct pump which was designed for your tractor.
PS, your existing hydraulic lines would have to be modified to use a gear pump.
