Voltage regulator

I changed the voltage regulator on my MF 135 with a Perkins gas engine. After plugging the wire plug into the regulator and connecting the battery cables I turned on the key switch and the gas gauge registered about 1/2 full (which is about right for amount of gas in tank). Turn key switch off and fuel hand goes to empty. Started the tractor and after about 5 minutes of use stopped and shut off engine. Gas gauge stays at 1/2 full. With the key in the off position the wire from the voltage regulator to the fuel gauge is still energized until the ground cable is removed from the battery then the fuel hand drops to empty. Put the cable back on the battery and the fuel hand goes back to 1/2 full. What is the answer to why this wire stays hot?

ASSUMING nothing else has failed or been altered or disturbed, my best GUESS is that your original regulator was a Delco mechanical regulator used with a 10DN alternator and that your replacement regulator is a generic ELECTRONIC replacement for the old mech regulator, and it doesn't function EXACTLY like the original mechanical unit did.

If you could get the Delco number off of the original regulator and search the 'net, you might be able to find a NOS unit that would function EXACTLY like the original did.

My 135 has a oil pressure switch tee into line for the oil gauge. When u turn it off that turn the power off to the gauge

If there is 12v going to the fuel gauge system, you could just wire it to the I terminal of the Key. Jim
