4x4 Restoration Project

Just curious how many of you guys have restored an older articulating 4x4 I'm considering a John Deere 8630 will not get worked hard.

It will cost about twice or three times what you think it will other than that more power to ya. Anytime you tear into a tractor no matter what it is they cost a lot to go through

(quoted from post at 18:34:35 10/12/19) Just curious how many of you guys have restored an older articulating 4x4 I'm considering a John Deere 8630 will not get worked hard.

I have an 8630 I kept when I quit farming in 1997.

I enjoy it a lot, it's still "field ready", but the paint's faded quite a bit.

Any "restoration" work beyond cosmetics would require some pretty heavy lifting equipment or splitting stand 'cause ANY repair that's needed will require front axle removal, or a "split".

I have the stands and equipment needed to do it, but the older I get, the less I like to work with this HEAVY stuff!

And once you're done, you have a "toy" that's a bit heavy to haul around to shows!

A friend has a 6030 at my place that needs to get in the shop this winter for engine work, it has a spun bearing.

'Nother case of a GREAT, HEAVY classic piece of iron that's not very easy to haul around!

I?ve slowly been working on a White 4-150. It?s still a working field tractor so I?ve been tackling one mechanical project at a time as money and time allow. When all the mechanical kinks are worked out I?ll finally tackle the fiberglass and paint work.

8630 is too new in my book to "restore" imo. Plus those tractors left a bad taste for a lot of farmers. More power to you though if you restore one. This is the one I'm slowly working on. Versatile D-145.

When I was 14, I skipped my 8th grade picnic to drive a Versatile 145 for a neighbor. Got $1.25 per hour. Loud and hot but had more power than anything I?d ever drove before.

These 145s were very popular in my area and they were the first 4 wheel drive tractor for a lot of farmers. They are one of the few examples of a cheap product that actually was good and reliable.

I meant to jump in earlier but I like the idea. Like others said it will cost a dollar or two. At some point I would like to do that with our 8430 even though it has a 50 series engine now. Runs good and the paint is fair but sprucing it up sounds like a good idea.

I had redone this case 2470 apx 10 years ago, it mostly is used in the fall for ripping and if needed it will get hooked to a pair of 350 bu gravity beds if the ground is soft or wet during harvest. its due for a new cab kit again.
