This is gonna be a long post so I can send all the details so bear with me.
Background: almost a year ago I was backing my John Deere 1010RS into the shed when it started running super rough, spitting out grey and black smoke. I shut it down thinking it was an engine problem. Since then I have put a combine motor in it for other reasons and when I moved the carb and manifold over the problem came with it. It s a marvel schebler tsx 809. When I open the fuel line and try and start it, it ll fire with full choke and then run on maybe one or two cylinders while putting out a lot of grey and occasionally black smoke. If I let it sit sometimes gas seems to seep between the gasket of the two halves, other times not, and one time after sitting for a few mins with the line open I came round to find gas just running out the air intake. I know all this points to the needle not sealing but I swear I ve checked that 10 times now, which leads me to...
Stuff I ve Tried:
New carb kit with float, cleaned out, put together, no difference
Checked float adjustment multiple times
Adjusted how far down into the carb the float drops
Screwed load adjust needle out 2.5 turns
Messed with the load adjust screw when I manage to get it cranked (makes no difference)
Checked new float to make sure it doesn t have a hole (it doesn t)
Switched the entire top half with another half I had, cleaned, reassembled, checked all gaps, and installed (no difference)
Tapped on the needle to make a little groove in it so it fits in the seat and seals
Taken the carb apart probably a dozen times and done all these things over again
When it does run, it will only stay running with choke. It seems to prefer it halfway. Today I tried shutting off the line while it was running, and that sorta helped. For a bit it tried to run on 4 cylinder instead of two, but I had to hold it at half choke. I don t know what else to try. I d try switching out the bottom half but my other bottom half has a small crack, and while it worked last I used it, I m afraid to run it. Maybe it could be a manifold problem? I don t know.
Here is a video of the tractor "running" with some throttle and half choke: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JHuTNX_SKYE
Please help!
