Tractor Mounted Fire Extinguisher Survey

What do you have for a tractor mounted fire extinguisher on your tractors, equipment and or similar ?

I need to add one or more to my R.O.P.S., something significant and more than adequate to stop a small fire before it gets out of control, the below post of one of my favorite tractors influence me to post the question. Share what you have, I think all benefit from this kind of safety discussion and or sharing experience of anything related.

My loader M,the exhaust manifold was cracked,i knew it,but didn't use it much, until one day had to take something out to the field, well in the mean time the birds decided to build a nest between the valve cover and manifold, when i got to the field,i could see flames thru the hole in hood, via the temperture gauge, good thing had i had soft dirt to threw up there,That got a fire extingusher and a new manifold in a hurry after that!

Going to put a 2.5 gallon water type extinguisher on the baler for next year. Got away with it this year, but not going to chance it again.

The water extinguisher is not for putting out fires but more for cooling hot bearings before they catch fire.

I have pressurized water extinguishers on both of my balers, and ABC extinguisher mounted outside the cab on most all tractors and another ABC in the cab of all equipment.

After three small fires from rock strikes. I have a 3 gal water extinguisher on my main mowing tractor and a powder extinguisher on the other. Years ago my JD 5020 had a wire short out under the steering wheel cover. Years of chaff soaked in oil started burning. I was near my vehicle. I ran for my extinguisher, and put the fire out. That got the heart pumping. Stan

I keep the 5 gal pressurized water ones with the combine, baler and bushhog. The water pressurized ones are also good for spraying bug killer in tall trees and putting wet and forget on the house.

backhoe/tractor/tractor/tractor/bandsaw mill/old truck/everyday truck/welder/shop/house...
had a gas leak and small flame from BIL 's welding...he runs to the house for extinguisher...
right past the welder mounted one....:)
all good in the end.

No other man portable fire extinguisher can match the ABC knockdown power of a 2-1/2 gallon pressurized water. In particular when it has been dosed with a cup full of dishwashing soap.

Ever time any piece of equipment is delivered to this farm the first thing we do is fit an ABC either in the cab or to the ROPS, just cannot have enouh fire extinguishers. All our picks ups also carry extinguishers.

Don't have one on anything. Had only one fire and an extinguisher would not have done the job. That was on and old UNI with the Detroit diesel in it. Just had washed it out good and had put the sheller on for picking corn from chopping.

2X what B&D said. It takes only 2-3 ounces of detergent to give you 50% more firefighting ability. Your fire dept has been putting foam in them for 20 years.

Dad put a carbon tetrichloride extinguisher on the MH2 picker, and the combine. Never used A good thing for both reasons. Jim

Do you mean the 478 V-6 diesel? That was the GMC Toro Flow four cycle truck engine. The New Idea Uni dealer I worked for sold several, but none had a two stroke Detroit. Chevy 292 and GMC 401 gas was common on early models, diesels were GMC, Ford, Perkins, AC, and Cummins.

One little tip with ABC type. Lay them flat. If you mount them vertically then about twice a year take them out of the bracket and shake them up, down, sideways, etc. The powder eventually settles to the bottom and it will not work when you need it. BTDT

Not only do I not have an extinguisher on any of my tractors, I don't have a ROPS or seat belt on any of them either. I guess I live dangerously. I do keep a 2.5 gallon pressurized water extinguisher on the round baler in summer.

Great topic. My equipment is all under roof but uninsulated. Won't the water type freeze? What type would work without needing to be brought in for the winter, which I would be sure to forget?

That is the challenge with the water extinguisher. That are only good outdoors from April to October here.
Engine antifreeze sprayed on a fire can smelly and irritating bit not as toxic as smoke or gasses from a fire .
I should dose my collection of 2-1/2 gallon water units with anti freeze . Ehylene Glycol on a burning fire is not as toxic as I thought it was.

I blow mine off every year after I am done bailing and refill it in the spring.

Water and air are free so it just costs little soap, I use it to hose down the grease on the tractor before I pressure wash it.

(quoted from post at 12:33:18 10/12/19) What does the soap Do?

The surfactant in the detergent breaks down the surface tension of the water so that it can penetrate into the class A fuel much faster. When the heat comes, instead of just a little water on the surface and most on the ground, there is much more water IN the fuel so it sucks up more heat cooling the fire.

I don't have them on any equipment anymore,..on the single occasion I needed one the dam thing was empty anyway.

Windshield washer fluid would work just fine and is a lot cheaper. I bring mine into the basement and store it near the wood stove.

STOP STOP STOP . Our -45F washer fluid burns , it does not extinguish fires .

Must be a Canadian thing because ours doesn't do anything but act like water.

Timely question.

Have a semi-serious high capacity fire pump with enough hose to reach any equipment shed on the lot. As for portables I realized after ten years of use that my old Fergie with its ancient fragile and exposed glass bowl fuel system is many times more likely to catch fire than any of my modern vehicles sporting their own extinguishers..so I fitted up a little ABC unit behind the seat just last week.

Probably useless once the entire fuel tank went up but if caught early far better than nothing. I realize I feel a whole lot better about driving it through the bush and branches now.

Now....who carries a serious first aid kit....... :D
