Tractor fire

BTO near me set his tractor on fire yesterday. I was on my way home to refill my sprayer and was the first on the scene. Story is he used a screw driver to start it.

That?s too bad, hopefully he didn?t get hurt trying to put it out. Looks like it was a nice tractor too,4610,5610?

Another pic. And more.
I was on my way back home to refill my sprayer. Seen the smoke and stopped by as he had just gotten back from calling the fire dept.
There is no cell service where this happened.
So all we could do was watch it burn until fire dept. Got there something like 20 minutes later.

One more. Also caught about 5 or 6 bales of hay on fire. He had been out Bush hogging the day before and was getting ready to go back out when this happened.

well considering what he's been doing with it (bush hogging a years accumulation of weeds in run down fields) my guess is there was some weed trash, leaves etc. laying on top of the transmission case under fuel tank. Plus what you mentioned and the fact that he MAY have spilled a little diesel filling the tank.

Sorry for the owner's loss. I had my phone with me when my 8N burned. Guess it needs to be rewired and retired (front tires only) and repainted plus a radiator and a battery. Shoul be "good as new" .........

We had a john deere G do that, My dad ran it out of fuel going out to plow so we filled the front tank will fuel oil and the back with gas. What happen is the gas can leaked fuel in and on the started part were the cover is at for the brushes are and no one seen it happen. Once he hit the started up it went.

Most likely a 4630, don't know of 4610 ever having hydrostatic steering, wrong front axle bolster, trans and rear axle for a 5610.

Awful when something like this happens, glad he did not get hurt and looks plenty salvageable, this model is a great general purpose tractor, I have the same one minus the loader but newer with the mechanical shuttle. I hope it does not get scrapped, well worth repairing especially seeing it was contained, but do have to wonder what gaskets seals and such were compromised.

One thing that stands out with these is that the tilt up engine cover over the battery does not have enough clearance to the positive battery cable, the flange will make an impression on the cable covering/insulation and can wear through, causing a fire. I lay a soft but firm enough shoe insole over the cable to cushion the flange and protect the cable.

Oh you guys must live out west or in Texas lol.

Around here south east Ohio. It is very hilly and all the farms are from the 1800's most only have 100 acres in size. The old time farmers have since died off and the kids rent out the farm to whoever they can get suckered in to work it. This retired school teacher and his son currently run cattle and Make the hay (weeds) off 6 of these farms near me plus there home farm 6 miles back towards town.

That's too bad. A lot of damage to a nice tractor. I always carry a fire extinguisher in my pickup so a little accident doesn't turn into something major. I also don't tighten down my battery cable clamps in case of an electrical short. I once put out a car that was on fire in a parking lot. The guy wouldn't even thank me or pay for another fire extinguisher.

Billy NY that one does have mechanical shuttle, shifter comes up thru the dash to the left of the steering wheel.
Shuttle trans on those tractors are easy to recognize, short shifter is on the left, 8x2 short shifter is on the right.

I was looking for that lever which the earlier versions had, like you said, and they sure are nice tractors, steering column mounted one is really comfortable. I see it has the same deluxe remotes, hate seeing one like this burn, hope they fix it.

I'd fix it myself but most likely it'll go to a salvage yard.
Wiring for that tractor will cost over $2K, plastic fuel tank is another $600+.

That reminds me, I have one of those plastic tanks laying around, I need to put it up and take care of it, should be worth a couple hundred.
