F 150 Timing chain

Not a tractor, but used to haul them. '05 Lariat with 152000 miles, diagnosed as timing chain noise.
$1500. off the cuff estimate. How long/many miles you reckon it will just keep tick-tick-ticking along. Has other issues, (torque converter not always locking in) but totally usable.

It's not the timing chain, it's cam shaft timing actuators. The heads wear in the oil feed area, causing pressure loss to the actuators, which makes them tick. If you replace the chain, it will still make the same noise. Engine main oil pump can also cause low oil pressure at idle. Below 15-20 psi at idle, the actuators start ticking, you may try 10w40 oil to see if it makes any difference. That being said, I have a customer with one that has ticked for at least 100K miles, it has almost 300K on it now.

Im assuming it is the 5.4 triton. They are known for the cam chain guides breaking and laying in the oil pan. Also the cam phasers go bad making valve train noise. I traded my 08 off at 50,000 miles. I didnt want all that to happen to me while i owned it.

A engine with that mileage do not try and fix ,replace engine with a factory reman
or trade it, at my Ford dealership we have had no luck in repairing
with a factory reman you get a decent warranty .

My '99 5.4 has always had some ticking, sometimes not. Dealer once told me as long as the chains don't make noise don't worry about them. 228K on it and run most of that with low oil. Doesn't burn it, I think it's the valve stem seals. If you have the three valve head that may be different.

Friend claims he paid $8K to repair his timing belt. I didn't know Ford used belts and to replace it the motor had to be disassembled.

I helped a guy back in the 70 repair his Ford V8 timing chain issues. Bent valves.

I think he had less than 100K. There wasn't any cylinder wear, no ridge at top of cylinders.
