Saw this guy on busy 4 lane headed towards Birmingham AL this morning. Just happened to catch him where the traffic was a bit thin so I snapped a couple pictures. No straps, no chains. And the young man was texting and driving.

I know I got it coming for taking the pictures while driving......

If DOT saw that the driver would be likely to be behind bars fast and or have has driving rights taken away

Not from me. Drivers like this give you that warm fuzzy feeling inside. The thing that really would get you is How many times has he gotten away with this or is it a one time stupid just doesn't know kind of deal??? EEEEAK!

I locked the brakes and left it in gear with the bucket and mower dropped. It aint going anywhere!

As long as I don't have to stop quick or make a quick turn or run off the road. :)^D

Then you have those who can secure a tractor well but don't understand proper balance and end up fishtailing to disaster!

Poor kid probably just figured no matter what he did the Ytdot would be on him for not using the right stuff which to them is as bad as using nothing so why not Just use nothing then 🙃🙃🙃

I know a guy who hauled an IH 1206 all the way from ND to here, about 450 miles, with nothing on it, but it was in park. He only brought one chain so they used that to tie down the cab that went with it, but the cab fell off. The tractor made it all the way.

May Have met you on 280 this am. See your gps says 901. Went to selwood farms today in childersburg and got there about 920. Went down 280 from bham. Was a perfect day weather wise.

Hey grandpa, better get that cracked windshield fixed before some one writes you a ticket! Leo

If he?s running a Farm License Plate on his truck then a trailer plate is not required in Alabama. I have two trucks
with Farm Plates (I live in Alabama) and I don?t have to tag my trailers and trailer lights are not even required but I
do have lights on all my trailers. I?m restricted to 150 mile radius from my home having these tags but I don?t always
legally comply by that and don?t think others do either.

All YTDOT inspectors start taking pix of tow trucks its rare to see a car/truck tied down as it should be, be it a rollback are wheel lift...

And they get away with it... Are they special are is it they have not killed enoufh folks yet..

What gets me is, what happens if...
....the guy has to slam on his brakes?
....gets rear-ended by someone not paying attention?
....gets a flat tire (especially front tire)?
....a deer runs in front of him?
....the driver chokes on his food/drink/chips/candy?
....the driver drops his cigar/cigarette?
....has heart attack, stroke, or ????
And on and on.....
Keep in mind, with the majority of these scenarios, it likely wouldn't be the driver that would get injured by the tractor. That's a definite Public Safety risk in my book. Just can't understand Department of [i:a41ca0d5e6]Public Safety[/i:a41ca0d5e6] not feeling the same!

Don't know if it still is, but years ago in Texas (maybe in MN also?) you could run a trailer without lights in the daytime. I did it when necessary, but ONLY if there was unobstructed view of my truck's tail lights. I wouldn't think a trailer of this size would be allowed to run without lights at any time. Even without a load, can't see the tail lights of the towing vehicle.

Old I bet in Alabama with farm tags he would not even get stopped. The stuff I have seen on farm tags in the southern states makes you scared to drive at times.

Cullman. About 6 miles west of town. A good map will show community of Trimble and I am 1 mile or so north. Trimble is located on upper end of smith lake.

Well I know here in Missouri when I was still driving over the road he would be stopped but now days not sure since one can pass a state cop in a 70 MPH zone doing 80 and the cop does nothing.

Any more cop do not do there jobs. I drove for the better part of 2 years with a badly cracked windshield and not even one cop looked let alone gave me a ticket for it. Law and order is not what i once was and the court system is joke at best

He was taking a gamble headed into Birmingham like that, out in the country the police wouldn't look twice at it. But the closer he got to the city the more likely to get stopped. He was coming up on some of the worst traffic in Alabama. The next hill has a stop light at the bottom and has had many, many wrecks. Lots of folks texting and driving and run up over the hill and BAM!!! Traffic stopped! He would have a major issue!!!

Where are the real DOT cops? Are most working the weigh stations?

A semi driver kills mom, daughter and son. He was distracted at a construction zone. A semi stops, mom in mini van stops and second semi driver distracted.

One year later, second semi driver kills 3 people and gets a $500 fine .

Then a guy pulling a trailer using the wrong size ball. Trailer kills someone, he gets jail time.

Does this seem right? If you kill someone while distracted you get a $500 fine.

Grandpa love, I would have stayed clear of that rig.
geo.

He is not a commercial trucker.
He is exempt from DOT rules.
Just ask some of the guys on this site.
They will tell you that.

In reality DOT would not have time to do their real job of policing real trucks if they pulled over every personal truck in violation of safety rules.

(quoted from post at 18:01:53 10/09/19) If DOT saw that the driver would be likely to be behind bars fast and or have has driving rights taken away

Where I am it would be a ticket and a fine. Certainly not jail time!

As far as cracked windshield, under our rules it would be a zero fine defect ticket (no fine if you get it fixed). However the windshield in the photo is not in violation here becaue the crack is low enough as to not be in the drivers direct vision. Not all cracked windshields are a violation here.
