I am selling chopped corn to a neighbor that is short on planted corn because of all the rain in the spring. 10+ miles one way. he has a bunk silo to dump in, and a 10 wheeler to haul it.

I was opening up the next field tonight with the Fox 3 row chopper, and ran out of wagon before I ran out of field.

this is the first time in the 40 years we have been here that I am not putting up any corn for myself. I have more than enough silage left from last year to finish feeding the Holstein heifers that are still bagging up before they are sold.

This is our first year with no corn planted in many years too. Did you guys recently sell your milking herd as well? I only ask because you mentioned having enough feed for the last of the heifers left before they?re sold.

We sold the 100+ milking herd in the spring of 2018. there was a full heifer barn of daughters from the cows that we have whittled down to 24 now. one is a Hereford that will stay to raise her calf when she calves in December, and she may need a roommate by spring. no more dairy animals, though, after having the same cow families, some since 1961. Nilo Sears May Maybelle 5576244, b.7-7-61. my first good 4-H animal. many descendants in the herd.

It?s a very hard decision to have to make. We had 65 milking in a Delaval VMS and had some long standing families here too. It?s funny,we bought many nice young pedigrees young cows over the years but the only families that continued to flourish here were mostly descendants of my grandfathers cows. Not show girls but stubborn hard working girls that seemed to throw a high percentage of heifers. We had a lot of smaller older equipment up for replacement and other than the robot in a 48? wide 2 row pole barn, the facilities were outdated. Help was very hard to find and keep coupled with lower milk pricing we decided to quit before it killed me trying to go day and night 7 days a week usually alone to keep going. I hope everything works out well for you and your family.
