Digging spuds on PEI

This is a promotional video from Allan Equipment here on
PEI. They manufactured all of the harvesting equipment in the
video. There?s 2 6 row windrowers and a 3 row electric
harvester. The benefits of the harvester being all electric is
lower hp requirements from the tractor, fewer drive chains,
fewer gear boxes and everything is controlled by a touch
screen in the tractor cab. There?s a 100kw generator mounted
on the harvester that can be removed to use for power
backup at the farm if you like after harvest.

Your welcome, our neighbour?s have one, this is their 3rd fall
digging with it and they love it. Does a great job and very few
issues.

I also want to Thank you for posting the link. I enjoy seeing how things are done in other crops and locations.

My Wife and I just got back from a driving vacation to Eastern Canada, N.B, PEI and N.S. Didn't know what to expect on PEI, was surprised to see that it is an agriculture based island. Corn, soybeans, dairy, beef heads and potatoes. It was so wet that some potatoes were harvested, some were ready and some were still green.I hope it dried out so the harvest could continue. We found it to be an amazing place. We even seen a sign on a corn field for Pioneer. Also the leaves in New Brunswick were just beautiful. This trip was on my bucket list to see the leaves and country. Couldn't do it before because of fall harvest, but have retired after 56 years of farming and can do some of the fall things and not worry. John

I looked your location up o the YT members map and We weren't very far from your location, in fact we might have been on Highway 142. Would have been nice to visit with a farmer from there. John

Kinda sounds like the International "Electrall" units from the mid 50s. We had one till my dad fryed it. Think they were 15KW. Took the place of your belt drive.

Jeffcat - I "think" I have one of those generators out in the shop. An old friend gave it to me about 20 years ago. He said it came off of an International tractor. I believe the tag says it will produce 1500 watts, but it has been a long time since I've looked closely at it.

It amazes me how they can handle the potatoes without damaging them. While gassing up the sleds in Van Buren ME last winter a potato truck came in and I got the driver to explain to me how they load the trucks in the winter.

Just wondering how many gillions of spuds come out of P.E.I ? An old friend of mine (88) just moved there and loves the place.

There?s around 90 000 acres in most years, they like to get 1 million pounds off 35 acres so that math makes around 2.5 billion pounds in a decent year off PEI.

My dad was in the Canadian Navy during WWII on a Corvette. He said they were on parade once during training in Halifax and the officer that was walking up and down the rows of sailors asked the guy next to my dad something like .... "Where you from sailor?" to which the young guy answered, "Spud Island sir." My dad thought that was pretty cool and told it many times.
