And not a scratch on the wood. I spent a lot of time on 40Cs when I was a youngster. My brother still has one of our dad's.

Looks to me like they just bolted wood 3x4's to the pads already on there.
Dad told about back in the 40's one wet wheat cutting putting 3 ft 2x4's on the tracks of the D-4 with a cable to the drawbar of his cousins M the cable was inbetween the front wheel to help bold it up in the mud. Would go till the mud was to the top of the radiator then pull it side ways and go again slid the combine on planks and cut wheat till September that year.

those are called "bog shoes" around here. It gave you some extra flotation when working on saturated soil or packing snow trails

I remember one year it was so boggy in the rice field we bolted 2x6 boards to every other steel track on a 403 international combine.it gave the needed flotation but we broke quite a few boards

When I worked for the JD dealer we looked at one of those. The owner had bought it to restore,it was a little rough but sound. The final drives had extenders to place the sprockets a foot away from the original hubs.It had long cross bars,or track frame supports also for the extra width.I remember him telling us that the brake linkage for the steering clutches had been removed,or modified, the only way the brakes would work was with the pedal. It was to prevent people from trying to spin on a dime like a regular crawler. The man was doing a Linderman crawler at the time,he said the swamp 40 was next.
